Ministry will fight rabies by Ross Stevenson MPP Durham-York I would like to discuss a new Pro- vincial program which should be of importance to many of us whether we have pets or keep livestock on our farms. The regional health departments of Durham and York have noted an increase in the number of cases this year. While the treatment of our pets and livestock is essential, we must try to control the spread of rabies in wildlife. This fall, the Ministry of Natural Resources will be taking its fight against rabies into a new phase. The Ministry will be assessing a new vaccination strategy for controlling rabies in wild foxes. Foxes, along with skunks, are the most prone to spread rabies. Natural Resources aircraft will drop 12,700 baits -- liver coated sponge cubes containing a liquid rabies vaccine -- in a test area bounded by Goderich, Blyth, Seaforth and Bayfield in southwestern Ontario. How effective have these baits proved in controlling rabies? Baits with marker dye were dropped in the same area last year and studies showed that two out of every three foxes in the area ate the sponge cube. The vaccine used in this year's drop will be activated once the fox chews the bait. In laboratory tests, the vaccine was shown to be effec- tive in about eight out of ten cases. From mid-October to mid- November, selected trappers in the test area will provide the Ministry with samples from foxes caught in their traps. An analysis of these samples will show how effective the immunization procedure has been. Once the Ministry has fully ex- amined the results from this test, the vaccinated bait will be dropped in areas where rabies has occurred frequently. Throughout southern Ontario, rabies has become a pro- blem as we are aware in our com- munities. Foxes and skunks are the main culprits with two cases in Georgina and 24 confirmed cases in East Gwillimbury. While the pro- blem was most severe in the Rich- mond Hill and King area in previous years, it has spread throughout York Region, acgording to the Public Health Department. In Durham Region, the confirmed cases of rabies has tripled as com- pared to the same time period last year. Cases have been more prevalent in foxes in Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge Townships. Uxbridge has the highest number of incidents with nine cases, six being foxes. The large majority of people who get rabies, catch the disease from their pet. Rabid animals often migrate to built-up areas and pass the disease onto pets or farm animals. Care should always be taken around any wild animal, especially if it is acting in a strange manner 193 QUEEN ST PORT PERRY (416) 985 1306 ALL LINES OF GENERAL INSURANCE TRUST VG since 1844 11% 5 Year Annual Interest 10% % Semi-Annually vo Charge W thou! To ensure a reduction in cases, all pets should be properly immunized against rabies by a trained veterinarian. Veterinary clinics in both Durham and York will be holding special clinics this month. Details will be made available in this newspaper. While the Ministry is hopeful that this bait will prove effective in cur- bing rabies in wild foxes, it is not stopping there. Natural Resources laboratories are also testing a new vaccine to be used on skunks. If you see an animal that you suspect to be rabid, don't go near it. Call the police. Rabies, if un- treated, is a fatal disease. Do not take any chances with an animal you suspect is rabid.
