18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 29, 1985 Bringing in the apples at Ocala One hundred and-eighty thousand apples later, Lloyd Smith can sit back and relax Either that or he can bake up the biggest, juiciest ap ple pie known to man. 180,000 apples 4,000 bushels with some 45 apples in each That's ap- proximately how many of the coun try's favourite fruit were grown this summer out at Ocala Orchards, Lloyd Smith's family farm just southwest of Manchester. Thanks to the weather, cool nights, sunny days and lots of moisture, Lloyd says he had a good quality crop this season with bushel after bushel basket full of macs, spy. delicious, spartans, and empires. Each year Lloyd likes to have his apples picked by October 25th and he was only one day late in 1985. With the help of a laughing crew of relatives and friends, the apples are picked by steady hands balanced on precariously high ladders. Once picked, the apples are stored in a controlled atmosphere room with the oxygen and temperature carefully monitored. By the time February 1st rolls around, the Ocala apples will be shipped either to Dowson's Valu- mart, where the first quality apples will be sold, or to Bowe's Confec- tionary in Colbourne, where the "peelers' (second quality apples) will be processed and sold to bakeries for goodies like pie fillings.
