20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 5, 1985 Twenty-eight Ontario Scholars return to Port Perry High School by Janet Simmonds Tonight it's our turn. Our turn tc look back over the last five years of our high school Caress or reflect on many experiences. It's also our trp to look to the future. Fellow graduates, Mr Gradish, Mr. Grant, Teachers, Family and Friends. Thank you for the opportunity to speak on If of our class. It is a great pleasure for me, but really, 'm not the only person on stage tonight. We are sharing the memories and experiences of 85 other people as well so .. let's look back together. Together is a very special word. Webster's dictionary defines it as "in or into one group or place, union; co-operation. " | feel that together is a very suitable word for us to center on tonight because together is what we have been for e last five years -- but more im- ' portantly together is what we are tonight. So, in keeping with this theme, | have taken each letter of the word together and made it rele- vant to our graduating class To begin with: T -- Of course what immediately comes to our minds 1s our TEACHERS. Take for instance Mr. Scott -- Mr. J. Scott. Our favourite french teacher who one day decid- ed it was time to houseclean his desk right in the middle of our class. Talk about efficient. Do you know any other teacher who can clean off the top of his desk in 5 seconds flat while teaching a few new vocabulary words in French and German" . And Mr Arculus. We must have heard over 1000 of his sick puns during our years here, but we have to admit that after hearing each of them we may have groaned, we may have smiled, or ---- we may have even laughed. -. Or how about Mr. R. Scott tell- ing our Chemistry class all about his old days at University in a tough Chemistry major. Labs, exams, blind dates and learning how to sneak up walls into girls dorm rooms were just a part of his very ' demanding schedule . Who could forget when Mr Brandon would get one of his spurts of energy and go off on one of his tangents all over the room and the desk and the wall And, Mr. Burt's class | bet he's never seen such a large number of "BLANK" students in all of his teaching career Finally, I don't think we will ever forget Mr Hill's rendition of the Lord's prayer one morning dur- ing announcements 'Lead us into temptation and deliver us not from evi]? Well, | guess everyone can see that our teachers and staff did add a little more than just homework, essays and tests to our high school activities C i ommencement Exercises O -- OPPORTUNITIES All through high school we were iven many opportunities We could on sports teams, musical groups, a variety of clubs, math and science J SLR A re Bihan * ey yr Port Perry High School's annual Commencement Exercises were held in fine style Friday night with a host of awards for deser- ving students, including 28 Ontario Scholars with 80 per cent or better in six grade 13 subjects. Those scholars include (front, from left) Janet Hofstee, Richard Allsopp, Angela Kiezebrink, Kevin Ferguson, Dianne Coates, Robert Dantzer, Valerie Fennema, (mid- contests, go on trips with our own grade or even all grade school trips. The neat thing 1s that in our oppor- tunities we succeeded: Winning basketball and volleyball teams, Sunderland Music Festival Winners, Canadian Music Festival Finalists, Track and Field Medalists, high percentage math contest winners, science fair project winners and the list goes on. Yes, we did a great deal with the opportunities we were given. We rew and learned to work as in dividuals and as groups. We took the "bull by the horns" so to speak and gave ever 'thing our best fight | really believe that P.P.H.S. has a lot to be proud of in the Class of '85. And speaking of the class of '85 this speech would not be complete if we didn't focus in on the graduates themselves Therefore, G must stand for GRADUATES Although time does not permit us to speak about everyone here tomght, I have taken the hberty, shall we say, of picking a few special incidents of certain graduates Who should we start with"? I know who really got our year going by bringing the class together and | mean all together in the hall one morning after announcements The day comes back so clearly. 90 or so pretty tough Grade 13 students sit WEIGHT WATCHERS Free eli mEeR (o1V) ! Acting abilities jumped out at us from some of our classmates. Julie Midgley, Steve T. and so many others will go down in history in the Grade 13's English plays "Hall of Fame." The actors and actresses brought a lot of laughs as well as a tremendous amount of applauding from ouf class along with many other students. ~.. Sports, Basketball, Nerfball. A favourite game among many of our grads They like it so much that they rought their own net and nerf basketball and played games of 21 in the Grade 13 hall in between classes until ... the authorities ask- ed them to remove it. And speaking of removing things ---- it seems to me that when we would go to the commons room at the beginning of the year, the cup- boards had doors on them. For some strange reason | guess someone thought that these cupboards were much more eye-catching and useful without the doors, so the doors were removed. But, then again, they ac- tually weren't just removed, they were ripped off, right Rich?! With just these few incidents one can tell that the Grade 13 class had a great sense of humour And what goes hand in hand with humour ---- enthusiasm of course E -- ENTHUSIAMS That is one thing our class didn't lack. Who will ever forget the first soccer game for which we were let out. Not me' What | noticed was that the crowd wasn't really wat- ching the game. They were more in- terested in the short shirts, tight sweaters, pretty make-up, and hairy legs hairy legs" Oh yea' Those amazirg cheerleaders Ken. Steve V . Dean and Darren brought the "wav. ' and lots of cheers and smile sto PP HS The portion of the Christmas assembly which featured the Grade 13's was written by fellow peers and performed by the entire class What enthusiasm ---- all of us entertain- ing the entire school Grade 13's were also en- thusiastic by participating in Students Council Events 13C came in second place, giving the second highest amount of donations in the Foreign Child Collection Their (Turn to page 26) 2 EA EF 35 £3 due ES yiitix py +l FLEE gig tlie] I EIN - Sit: HEIR 15 IE i Gaandtl dle) Christine Bauer, David Kemp, Debra Kiezebrink, Daryl Musselman, Stephen Tzountzouris, Kelly West, Lori Cole, Kevin Hobbs, Pauline Kimberley, (top) Katherine Nippard, Patricia (Tish) LeFort, Susan Edmiston, David Legere, Grant Parrett, Antonius DeBruyn, Christine Wilson, Denise Shortt, Susanne Holy, Laurie Smith and (absent) Sheila Westerink and Corinne Moehring.
