Other people will argue that these cases of maltreatment have been going on for years and are just now being brought out in the open. The Rape Crisis Centre in Port Perry was set up six years ago to cope with the physical and sexual abuse cases being brought to light in our communities. This Crisis Centre mainly serves the Municipalities of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge although the staff will accept calls from anywhere. The Centre is called on for help about fifteen times a mon- th(every second day) to tend and care for all kinds of abuses. Clients range in age from seven to eighty- four years and are mostly females. The Centre is staffed by ten workers, all of whom are volun- teers with no pay. It is located in the Brignall House, nor- th of the Municipal Building, on North Street. The volunteer co- ordinator for Port Perry is Jean- nette Ross. One third of the funding for the Centre has been available from the Province by two arrangements of three years each. This means that two-thirds of the funding has to be raised locally. This is where the Port Perry Lions Club is trying to help. On November 2 there was a costume dance held in the (new) Lions Hall at Manchester with all the proceeds going to the Crisis Centre.
