2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 5, 1985 ) FOR COUNCILLOR WARD 3 SCUGOG ISLAND DON COCHRANE Fair - Honest Available Representation with Strong Voice For Information and Transportation ... call 985-2788 VOTE TO REELECT / CHRISTIE COUNCILLOR -- WARD 1 MAKE THE VOICE OF REACH COUNT Conflict raised at candidates meeting last week Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor told an all candidates meeting last week 'I honestly think I was well within my rights" when he became involved in a subdivision develop- ment last year on Scugog Island. The issue of conflict of interest was raised several times in questions from the floor at the candidates meeting at the Lat- cham Centre last Wednesday even- ing. Responding to those questions, Mayor Taylor said he believes members of council "have the same rights as all other citizens" as long as any conflicts of interest are "totally disclosed." He said he has disclosed his in- terest in the subdivision proposal whenever the issue came in front of the council, and has not taken part in any discussion or voted on the matter. The Mayor's opponent in the race this election is the present area councillor John Wolters. He told the meeting the issue of con- flict of interest is not a legal question, but a "moral and ethical one." He said 'this cannot be con- doned" and the conflict has divided ELECT ¥ y wt EB Vy. "For reasons of principle, I was not able to support the develop ment proposed by the Mayor and his partner," said councillor Wolters. It was expected that the conflict of interest would be raised at the all candidates meeting last week. Moderator Paul Arculus kept a close watch on the proceedings, and aside from a couple of out- bursts from the audience, the meeting was orderly and cordial. One member of the audience wanted to know if all candidates for office would declare that they would not seek any by-law changes affecting themselves or their families, and not support any by- law changes affecting other mem- bers of council. Mayor Taylor called this a "foolish and mis-leading question," and councillor Harvey Graham, who is seeking election this term to the area seat, stated that he is involved in the business of farming and will continue to be. If the situation arises where 'I have to declare a conflict of in- terest, I will do so, but to state FOR COUNCILLOR e Available 12 months a year ® Proven Leader ® Fiscally Responsible ® Knowledgeable ® Plain speaking and a strong voice for the hamlets of Reach.
