MoJacks fade in the stretch by John C. McClelland Four unanswered goals in the third period lifted the Uxbridge Bruins to a 7-5 victory over the Port Perry MoJacks in Junior C hockey action Sunday night at the Scugog Arena. The MoJacks were less than sharp throughout the game and seemed to have all kinds of trouble getting organized. It was just the second defeat so far in this young season and the team now sports a record of three wins, two losses and a tie. The Bruins hit for two goals ear- ly in the first period with Lee Brown pumping a rebound past Ken Har- man in the MoJack net a 4:53, followed by Mike Brown less than two minutes later who also took ad- vantage of a loose puck in front of Harman. At 11:26, the MoJacks Rob Nicholson scored on a power play and late in the period, captain Brian Nicholson knotted the game at two each. He put a great move on a Bruin defender at the blue line, then ripped a hard shot to the corner. MoJacks looked like they might be getting their game in order ear- ly in the second when Andy Sutch fired a shot through the Bruin goalie at 1:46 to make it 3-2. And then two minutes later, Dean Smith thread- ed the needle with a shot from the left face off circle to give the team a 4-2 lead. But at the 7:00 minute mark, the MoJacks were sloppy at their own line as Scott Harper stole the puck and raced in untouched to beat Har- man and make the score 4-3. Midway through the period, Brian Nicholson put his team up by two again on a solo rush down the ice. As a Bruin defender leaning heavily on him, Nicholson cut to the net and with one hand on the stick, flipped the puck past Ryan Tarleton in the Bruin cage. The MoJacks were fortunate to take a two goal lead into the dress- ing room after 40 minutes of play. They were not clicking with their passes and on more than one occa- sion looked very sloppy while chang- ing lines on the fly. The roof began to fall in at the 5:00 minute mark when Tim Evans scored a power play goal, followed by Ken Burrows at 8:44 to tie the game. He was allowed to walk in unharmed on the MoJack cage. The winner for the visitors came at 16:20 when Burrows had several swipes at a loose puck in front of Harman. And with less than two minutes to play, Todd Laroche put the game out of reach on a clear breakaway. In other Junior C action over the weekend, the Lakefield Chiefs hand- ed the Bowmanville Eagles their se- cond loss of the year as they dumped them 9-7. Lindsay Muskies downed the Uxbridge Bruins 6-2, and the Cobourg Cougars grabbed a share of first spot with Lakefield as they nipped the winless Little Britain Merchants 54. With seven points, the MoJacks are in a log-jam for third place in the league standings. The MoJacks will have to regroup and get things going for this weekend as they have a couple of tough games. On Friday, they pay a visit to the Lindsay Arena for a match with the improving Muskies, and on Sunday night at the Scugog Arena, they host the surprising Cobourg Cougars.
