A cruise up the driveway and behind that house reveals more than the ordinary, an addition built last summer that contains the amazing artwork of its owners. Both Ed and Anne are well into their sixties but both possess great imaginations and skills that keep them young, both in looks and spirit. "It's all this that keeps us young," says Anne, a small, shim woman with large bright eyes. She gestures around her dining room, every inch of which is filled with artwork from all over, in- cluding her own. The dining room table is covered with pieces made by the couple, as is the living room and the studio -- the addition which has changed the look of the north Nestleton home so completely. Anne and Ed have been working ten hours a day for awhile now, cranking out art, functional pottery and jewellery in preparation for their open house and sale, schedul- ed November 16th and 17th from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. It's not their first sale -- they hosted one last year although it wasn't half the scale this one will be. Still, last years was more than suc- cessful with visitors coming main- ly from Toronto. This year, Anne is hoping to see more local people out this time around. Both artists hail from this area. The farm on which they now live, still taking care of a herd of cattle, is Ed's parental home. . He moved to Toronto as a younger man and wound up teaching In- dustrial Arts for the University of Toronto, but was more than happy to come back '*home" in the sum- mer of '83. "We finally sold our Toronto house and decided to stay here," he says. On top of taking care of the cattle, he is an avid goldsmith and silversmith, and is renowned for his skill creating unusual jewellery made from crystals. The crystal pottery which he makes is also highly regarded and sells for small fortunes in art shops and gallerys in Toronto. Anne is known mostly for her pot- tery, which she says is nothing at all like ceramics. "I don't think anybody realizes what work goes into it,"" she says. Unlike ceramics, where the clay is poured into a form, fired, and then painted or glazed, the biggest task in pottery is forming the 'object', almost always by hand or with the help of a wheel. Anne has packed a lifetime of knowledge about different types of clay, glazes and firing techniques in- to her small frame, and uses it to come up with beautiful and unusual functional pottery (bowls, mugs, dishes, vases), jewellery made from chunks of pottery strung together, and artwork. Included in the artwork category are wallhangings of strange yet beautific masks, sculptured heads and unusual plaques. Hours and hours are spent on each piece, and if a finished product isn't perfect, if even one small hairline crack marrs its surface, the piece is rejected. Knowing Ed and Anne Emerson, there won't be anything less than perfect on display at their open house. For more information and directions call 986-4388.
