Defeats challenger John Wolters by 865 votes Taylor returned as Mayor Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor has been returned to otfice for another term. 'He fought off a challenge from John Wolters to win by more than 800 votes as Township residents went to the polls on Tuesday. When all 35 polls in the Township were tallied by about 11:30 Tuesday evening, the unofficial results show- ed Taylor with 2996 votes, while Wolters had 2129. The race for the Mayor's chair In Ward 1, Yvonne Christie pull ed ahead of incumbent Neil Hunter to win by 47 votes. In a mp and tuck battle that went almost down to the wire, Mrs. Christie wound up with 703 votes to 656 for Hunter. Harold Westerman, the third candidate in this race finished with 149 votes. And in Ward 4, residents may have to wait a few days to find out who their councillor will be as Jim Marlow 'is seriously considering a recount' after losing to Neil fimshed with 214 and Brad Het cman with 171 In the race for the Mavor's chair, challenge from two candidates to re- tain his seat quite easily. Cochrane had 319 votes, while Randy Scott It became apparent as the election wore on that Cartwright voters were (Turn to page 8) McLaughlin by a scant six votes. Marlow and McLaughlin battled it out poll by poll with McLaughlin coming up with 517 votes to 511 for Marlow. The outcome of this race was not known until the results of the advance poll had been counted. Chester Pedzikowski polled 108 votes, while Bill Linington had 115 in Ward 4. The race for the Regional council seat was really not a contest as in- cumbent Lawrence Malcolm had lit- tle trouble fending off challengers Don Crosier and Ruth Mark. Malcolm led from start to finish and counted 3021 votes. Crosier finished 1478 and Mark with 521. And in the race for the area seat, Harvey Graham led from the first poll over Tom Vanderende. Graham, who is the incumbent Ward 4 councillor polled 3963 votes, while Vanderende took 935. In a ward race that some pundits predicted might be close, Howard Hall was an easy winner in Ward 2 over Roy Grierson. Hall took all the polls in the ward except the nursing home to finish with 1086 votes, while Grierson had 548. And on Scugog Island, incumbent Don Cochrane fought off the was not as close as some had been predicting through the campaign, but in Wards 1 and 4, the race went right down to the wire. Durham Northumberland MP Allan Lawrence announced last week that the speed of the Havelock- Toronto train, which makes stops in Burketon and Myrtle, will be in- creased from 40 to 50 mph. A 7) - It was a cold and blustery day on Sunday, November 10th, but even the weather didn't discourage a small crowd at the Port Perry Royal Canadian Legion Hall, as men, women and children gathered to lay wreaths at the cenotaph and honour those who died for our country. Since the VIA service was restored last June, the train has been operating at a maximum of 40 mph. The Federal government paid for improvements to the road bed and this will allow the increased speed. "Now. it's leaving at a more civilized hour, which g@ertainly should attract more passengers." Mr Lawrence said last week The train will now arrive al Toronto's Umon Station at 8 30 each morning In making the announcement that speeds will be increased as of next Monday. Mr Lawrence said he ex pects that in the near future. the fare structure will be altered so that passengers will pay the same on Fridays as they do other weekdays. And VIA may also free up some money to do some local advertising and promotion of the service There are now more than 60 passengers who use the train each day through the week, but last week from Myrtle, it was standing room only.
