~ " ETERS et TU Ror Ng GR Ce a a RRR Sa RC - 238. A There's nothing like wood It's common knowledge that no matter how busy a life-style you lead, having a hobby is a great way to relax and get your mind off the day-to-day pressures of job or business. And there's a group of Township residents' who say that when it Charlie with a sparrow hawk. comes to a hobby, there's nothing quite like wood carving, especially the carving of birds. Charlie Lown, Frank Hedges and Guy Latreille are avid bira carvers and they have decided to try to form a local club, called appropriately Srloligh the Birdseye Wood Carvers ub. 'The group has had a couple of in- itial meetings attended by about a dozen people with an interest in wood carving, but they say that anyone who has done some carving or would like to give it a try is more than welcome to attend the meetings. "We feel the formation of a club is a good way to exchange ideas and techniques. We can offer each other support and there is the fellowship of common interest,' Guy told the Star in an interview last week. If the Birdseye Wood Carvers Club gets off the ground, members would like to bring in highly skilled carvers as guest speakers or to con- duct seminars. They would also like to display their works each year at an annual show. The carving of birds from wood i is not a new art form, but Frank says the popularity has jumped tremen- dously in the last few years. "There are a lot of people right here in Scugog Township who are bird carvers and they come from just about every walk of life," said Frank, who's a retired electrician. Frank became interested in car- ving about two years ago when he saw a display at the Sportsman Show in Toronto. He took a course from an expert and now is so busy at the hobby that he is making atiout one bird each month. o He was very pleased last fall when one of his creations brough $400 at the auction during the Port Perry Ducks Unlimited inaugural dinner. "That was a real ego builder for me," he said with a smile. He has entered his works in several com- petitions and has been quite successful. Charlie Lown, a mechanic in Port Perry, has been carving birds for the past seven years. He first became interested through the late Lawrence Davis of Seagrave, an acknowledged master of the art whose works are in great demand. Charlie still has his first carving, a beaver, which he admits with a smile looks more like a bear on its hind legs. But with practise and the use of sophisticated tools, Charlie has now reached the point where he's going to tackle a single carving (Turn to page 33) Pins JUNIOR LEAGUE Team Standings: Pontiacs - 25; Chevettes - 19; Oldsmobiles - 19; Firebirds - 15; Buicks - 15; Lemans - 12.
