Sports Four straight losses knock team out of playoff action q LJ | For the second straight season, MoJack captain Brian SP 'Nicholson was named the Central Junior C Most Valuable Player. He received the Erv Downey Memorial Trophy last Friday night from convenor Andy McLaughlin. Despite Nicholson's scoring feats (56 goals, 24 assists in 28 games), the MoJacks had a less than banner year, winding up sixth in the league and then bowing out four straight to Cobourg in the quarter finals. (See story for the details) Legionnaires hot by Chris Legere On Thursday, January 23, the Port Perry Legionaires hosted Ajax in their first playoff game of the season and they started off on a win- ning note by beating them 5-3. Dan- ny Sluggett scored the only goal of the first period assisted by Eric Grosvenor and Jan Heyes to give Port the lead in the game. In the second period Eric Grosvenor scored Port's second goal assisted by Jan Heyes and Jarett Harman on an excellent pass- ing play while on the power play. Ten minutes later Mark Andrews scored on a pass from Jan Heyes and Eric Grosvenor to increase Port's lead to 3 goals. Ajax scored their first goal with 2 and a half minutes left in the se- cond period. Two minutes into the third period Eric Grosvenor scored on a passing play from Sean Brad- bury and Jan Heyes. Ajax scored once more but only 2 minutes later, Port came right back as Graham Sullivan scored with an assist going to Sean Bradbury. Ajax scored once more but that wasn't enough and the final score was Port 5 and Ajax 3. On Monday January 27 the Port Perry Legionaires hosted Pickering in their second game of the Round Robin playoff series and Port came out with a convincing 6-4 victory. Pickering scored the first goal of the game but Jason Towns scored a goal on a passing play from Adam Cum- mings and Sean Bradbury to tie the game at one apiece. Jarett Harman only 2 minutes later deflected a shot from Chris Legere while on the power play to give Port the lead by one. With only 30 seconds left in the first period Jan Heyes scored Port's 3rd goal on passes from Chris Legere and Mark"Andrews to make the score 3-1 in favour of Port at the end of the 1st period. In the second period, Pickering got one goal but Port retaliated with two more goals in return. With only 2 seconds left in the game Brett Puckrin scored his first goal of the season to wrap the game up with Port on top winning 6-4 in a well-played game. Port Perry's next game will be on Friday, February 7th at 9:00 against Uxbridge. " convenor The hockey season came to a quick and painful end Friday night for the Port Perry MoJacks as the team lost 10-7 to the Cobourg Cougars and was knocked out of playoff action in four straight games. The playoff story was the same one that nagged the MoJacks all . season long; they gave up too many goals and were unable to protect a lead. In the four losses to Cobourg, the MoJacks gave up 36 goals, while scoring 16. During 28 regular season games, the MoJacks gave up 162 goals. Only the Port Hope Panthers had a worse defensive record. Facing elimination at the Scugog Arena Friday night, the MoJacks looked for a short time as if they might extend the series as they jumped into an early 3-0 lead on - goals by Andy Sutch, Rob Sedore and Brian Nicholson. But in a span of less than 12 minutes, the MoJacks fell apart and allowed the Cougars to storm back with six markers of their own to take a 6-3 lead into the dressing room after the first period. . Midway through the second, Jeff Johnstone flipped a shot just under the cross-bar to make it 6-4, but a minute later, the Cougars again held a three goal lead. Hard work by forward Paul But- terworth paid off late in the period when he made some nice moves - deep in the Cobourg end and scored - with a good shot to the corner. But the Cougars made it 8-5 early ir the third and then Rob Nicholson found the range with a short-handed goal at 4:02. : The: MoJacks pressed hard but could not get the puck bouncing for them and the Cougars made it 9-6 at the 8:15 mark. The visitors increased the lead to 10-6 at the 14 minute mark and Paul Butterworth, with his second of the night, rounded out the scoring late in the game on a solo rush through the Cougar defense. It was the end of a disappointing season for thé MoJacks who manag- ed just ten victories in 32 league and playoff games, and just two vic- tories since December 22. There were a couple of bright spots for the team, however, and one was the play of Brian Nicholson. He hit for 56 goals and 24 assists, good enough for second spot in the. league scoring, two points behind Lindsay's Gary Howell. Nicholson was voted the league MVP for the second straight year and Junior C Andy McLauchlin presented "Joe" with the Erv Downey Memorial Trophy during Friday's game. Linemate Andy Sutch also had a good year, with 14 goals and #44 assists to finish fifth in league scor- ing. His 44 assists was just one short of the league leader Howell. Sutch came close to winning the Rookie of the Year award, but lost out to Lind- say's Mike Piggott, who finished with 33 total scoring points. The MoJacks will be losing several players because of age next season, including Brian Nicholson, Ken Harman, Brian Hendricks and Mark Goreski. Team officials are suggesting that the league may allow a small number of over-age players to join the team rosters next year. Darren Nesbitt, who joined the team on defense late in the season, showed great promise in the few games he played and there are in- dications that he could be back in a MoJack uniform next year. One reason why the MoJacks gave up so many goals during the , Season was the number of penalty minutes the team was assessed. League stats show the MoJacks took 1210 minutes in the box this season, just 33 minutes short of the Bowmanville Eagles, who are con- sidered the "bad boys' of the Cen- tral Junior loop. The Little Britain Merchants had just 868 minutes in penalties, and they also had the second best defen- sive record in the league. ul season ends for MoJacks OTHER ACTION In other Junior C playoff action, the Port Hope Panthers pulled off what has to be the upset of the year as they downed Bowmanville four games to one. The Panthers will now tackle the Cougars in the semi- finals. Lakefield Chiefs defeated Lindsay 5-3 Sunday night to take that series four games to one, and they will now meet the Little Britain Merchants who romped to an easy four games to one victory over the Uxbridge Bruins. The Panthers and the Mer- chants finished at the bottom of the league standings, while the Eagles and Bruins were on top. Uxbridge scored at the 13:08 mark to take a quick lead. The score stood 1-0 for the remainder of the period, but things were different in the second. : Stacey Ballingall fed a pass to Brad Traves who then shot it off the boards at the visiting end. The puck rebounded off the boards and War- ren Geer picked it up and he blistered a slapshot past the surpris- ed Uxbridge goaltender. Uxbridge seored three consecutive goals after that to take a commanding 4-1 lead. The last goal of the game from from Mark Barkey at the 4:11 mark to make it 4-2. Despite the efforts of the Port squad, the time was short and Port found themselves losing 4-2. Port didn't take long to rebound and pounded the men from Ajax 11-1.
