Garbage collector is Edgar Brown, the man who picks up garbage in Port Perry, Scugog Island and parts of Cartwright, has been given a strong vote of con- fidence by Scugog Township council. Council last week voted to extend the garbage collection contract with Brown's Sanitation Services until the end of October, 1987. = - The company has held the con- tract with the Township for the last five years. Administrator Earl Cud- die said last week that extending the contract without asking for tenders is a reflection of the service the Township has received from Mr. ~ Brown's company. : "It's not an unusual practise for municipalities to extend such con- tracts without tendering when the level of service is good," he stated. Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor also had words of praise for the way. gar- bage is being collected in this municipality. "We are very pleased with the way he (Mr. Brown) handles any problems. The municipality receives very few complaints. The praised by Council rates Scugog is paying for garbage collection are acceptable and com- pare very favourably to what other municipalities are paying," said the -Mayor. In voting to extend the contract for another 21 months, the council agreed to increase the weekly cost per pick-up from the present 75 cents to $1.10, effective January 1 of this year, and to increase it to $1.25 on October 1 of this year. Mr. Brown had been seeking an immediate increase to $1.25 per pick-up, citing higher costs for such things as gasoline and insurance for his trucks. Figures from the Township in- dicate that garbage collection in Port Perry and Prince Albert, Scugog Island and parts of Ward 4 will cost $246,000 this year. There are 2282 pick-ups in Port Perry and Prince Albert, 889 on Scugog Island and 981 in Ward 4. The cost of garbage collection is a direct charge back to residents of the Township who receive the service. However, by voting to study the issue further at the Regional level, councillors in effect told the pro- vince they are not interested in ad- ding more reps to the council at this time. Figures compiled by the Region show that Ajax, with two reps on Durham council has a population of 33,000, or a little over 16,000 people for each rep on council. Whitby has three reps at this time, with a population of 44,000, or 14,700 per- sons for each rep. Scugog, by comparison has two reps for 14,000 people; Brock has two for 9,000 people, and Newcastle has four reps for 32,700 people. Both Ajax Mayor Bill McLean and councillor Jim Witty argued strong- ly in favour of the additional reps for their community. "Since 1974, there have been shifts in the population and growth pat- terns of the Region. Ajax and Whit- by now are significantly under- represented," said McLean. He said the issue has been studied enough over the past few years and it is time to make a decision. Councillor Witty also argued against studying the matter further, and he warned that one way to give Whitby and Ajax the added representation without increasing the total size of the council, would be take one councillor away from each of the other six municipalities.
