See story for details on the Junior competitions. # oN © © by Scott Howey There was a lot of action this weekend at the Curling Club as Port Perry hosted the Junior Mixed Zone and the Seniors Regional Competi- tions. Due to nine teams being entered in the Junior Mixed, a preliminary game on Friday night saw Port Perry's entry of Dean Haugen, Debbie Van Camp, Darren Gibson and Wendy Brown defeat Randy Scott of Newmarket. The first draw of Jniors started at 9:00 A.M. Saturday with Andrew Mepstead of the Oshawa Curling Club, Don Campbell of Richmond Hill, Dean Haugen, and Jeff Jenkins of the Oshawa Golf Club coming out the winners. In the second round on Saturday afternoon, Mepstead downed Campbell while Jenkins dropped Haugen to the B side. In the B side quarter-finals on Sunday morning, Haugen with Steve Gib- son, replacing Darren Gibson, eliminated Scott of Newmarket and Brian McLean of Unionville beat Campbell. Haugen was finally eliminated in the B side semi-final by McLean. The A side final saw An- drew Mepstead defeat Jeff Jenkins with an exciting tenth end finish. Mepstead, down by one and with last rock, wgs facing two Jenkins' counters on his last shot. Mepstead threw a perfect shot removing both stones to win the game. Jenkins went on to win the B side final against McLean. Both Mepstead and Jenkins now travel to the Regionals in two weeks time. Well done on the efforts of Dean, Debbie, Darren, Wendy and Steve. Seniors In the Seniors Competition, the first round on Saturday afternoon saw Hushagen of Humber Highland, Heggum of Boulevard, Brouilette from Bayview and Gidelings from Annandale remaining on the A side. Saturday night Heggum defeated Hushagen while Brouilette emerg- ed over Gidelings. In the A side final Brouilette dropped Heggum to the B side final in a game in which Heg- gum had control but let it slip away. Hushagen came through the B side to also defeat Heggum and join Brouilette and six other teams at the Ontarios'. : In other news, the teams of Scott Howey, Dave Roth, Ken Jeffrey, and Rick Beare and the team of Robin Parish, Bob Bruton, Brad Howsam and Beaver Howsam are travelling to- Newmarket this com- ing weekend for the Colts Competi- tion. Good luck to both teams. In news from the Ladies Curling Club, the team of Judy Latta, Ellen Gib- son, Marg Jackson, and Gwen Lake reached the semi-finals of the In- termediates that were held at the Whitby Curling Club from Feb. 10-12. The Diamond Seniors were represented by Helen Parish, Noreen Malcolm, Ruby Smith and Marie Snooks. This weekend the Curling Club is holding the Ladies "Hank's Pastries bonspiel.
