2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 18, 1986 For historical importance Town Hall 1873 recognized Port Perry's Town Hall 1873 has been officially recognized for its 'historical and architectural importance. The building with the distinctive bell tower at the corner of Queen and Lilla Streets, has received the recognition from the Historice Sites an: Monuments Board of Parks Canada. The Board recently completed a tour of historic old town halls across Canada. The building will be officially designated with the unveiling of a bronze plaque. This ceremony will take place in 1991. However, the - Monuments Board may consider moving this ceremony ahead to co- incide with a local anniversary, centennial or other special event. In designating the building as historically and architecturally im- portant, the Monuments Board points out that this does not mean it will receive any kind of financial support, nor does it offer any assurance of the building's preser- vation under law. Ironically, Town Hall 1873 was slated for demolition about a decade ago, but a citizens group persuaded the Township council to save the building. It has been renovated ex- tensively and now serves as a focal point for art showing, amateur theatre, concerts and musicals. At one time during its long" history, the building was used to manufacture ladies under- garments. The U.S. Farm Bill has reduced the loan rate for corn -- effectively a minimum floor price -- to almost $100 (Cdn.) per tonne, and in the event of a good harvest Ontario prices will plummet. "Ontario produces virtually three- quarters of Canada's corn," points out Stevenson, '"'and if Ontario's > OPEN Thursday & Friday evenings till 8:00 p.m. hai shoppe Agriculture Minister does nothing, Ontario's farm financial crisis will worsen seriously." Stevenson calculates that a sup- port program for Ontario corn iden- tical to the U.S. plan, would cost $200 million dollars. He says he is not ad- vocating such an identical program at this moment, but wants to see im- mediate consultations between all parties to develop a two-year pro- gram. Stevenson feels at least two years are necessary to deplete U.S. surplus stocks. Port Perry's distinctive Town Hall 1873 has been officially recognized by Parks Canada as a building having historical and architectural significance. A bronze plaque will be unveiled to recognize the dedication in 1991. The Town Hall, now used for cultural activities, was at one time a plant where ladies under- garments were made. That case is now under appeal. "It is this kind of thing that real- ly has us (farmers) worried," said Mr. Noble. On the issue of farm severances, Mr. Noble says there are instances where the right to sever a lot has been abused, but the organization would not like to see that right taken away completely. He noted that if a family member works the farm and builds a house on the property, but decides in a couple of years to stop farming, the house and lot could become added debt to the farm, if it was not per- mitted to be severed and sold. The policy statement released by the provincial government last week is a lengthy document dealing with many aspects of land use policies related to farming in Ontario. - Mr. Noble said the Durham Federation executive plans to study the entire document before its next meeting in March. The local organization may respond to the statentent through the Ontario Federation or directly to the provin- cial government. PLAN FOR 1986 NOW!
