oo J Et ee A well known local advocate for the rights of physically challenged people, Jay S. Madsen, will soon be leaving us for Ottawa to work with five Members of Parliament on an investigation of the needs of people with disabilities. ~ Madsen; who has been working for CTG, Inc., a business telephone company, as an advisor to the vice- president in charge of the sales in- formation centre, told the Star he leaves his old company with.regret because he feels it was an in- teresting place to work. "But I have been writing to government officials about disabled people's concerns for years, and now I'm being given a chance to help change things," he says. "I can hardly wait to get there." Income tax assistance A new service of Scugog Com- munity Care will assist low income and disabled people to prepare their Income Tax returns. Volunteers have taken a training course at the Ministry of Revenue in Oshawa and are prepared to provide this con- fidential service to those needing assistance. Appointments may be made by calling the Community Care Office 985-8461 (Weekdays 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon and 1-4p.m.). Returns will be prepared the week of March 10th. Special arrangements can be made to visit your home if necessary. ECONO BOX JAY MADSEN Almost blind since birth, Madsen has never let his handicap get in the way of achieving his goals. He at- tended local Port Perry schools, though a school for the blind might have been easier for him to manage it. "Even then, I felt that physical- ly challenged people should not be segregated from the rest of socie- ty," he comments. (Madsen now gives lectures at the University of Toronto every summer to special education teachers, on mainstream- ing handicapped children into the ordinary school environment). He attended university, after which he was unemployed for several years. Patrick Boyer, MP, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Sub-Committee on Equality Rights. his lengthy letters on the unequal status of disabled Canadians led Boyer to describe Madsen on CKO PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 25, 1986 -- 17 Radio last December as "one of the most articulate advocates for the disabled people in this country.' Several days after making this com- ment on the air, Boyer visited Madsen at his Toronto office and asked his help in providing more op- portunities for the handicapped. He will act as a consultant to a Jazzmerize corned pals at Hall for cabaret by Elizabeth Smith The Port Perry High School Jazz- merize Parents Association will be presenting "Jazzmerize and Friends' at the Town Hall 1873 in Port Perry on Friday, March 7th and Saturday, March 8th at 8:00 p.m. Friday night is concert time, and Jazzmerize will appear with the Touch of Class, Swingsation (the High School Senior Stage Band), the School Dixie Combo, plus some "Mystery Peformers" or last minute surprises. Tickets are $5.00 each. This would be a good opport tunity to bring the whole family to see and hear some of Port Perry's fine young musicians. Saturday night will be a Cabaret night, featuring most of the same performers, with an Auction during the evening. Items to be auctioned off will include donations from local businesses, craft items, novelty items and even the shirt off 'so- meone's' back! This event is under the auspices of a special occasion permit, and gourniet "goodies" will be provided for every one's enjoy- ment. During the evening, a draw will take place on the raffle tickets that are being sold for a Patio Set. Tickets for the evening are $7.00. Tickets for both evenings are available from Irwin Smith Music in Port Perry. Friday night tickets can also be purchased through members of the Port Perry High School Jazz- merize Parents Association. Satur- day night tickets are sold on an assigned table basis, so hurry to make up a table and join in the fun.
