Scugog island W.I. ~ by Penny Kutlik Travel. What a broadening ex- _ perience! This was an apt motto for this month's program about China and Helen Redman suggested that maybe not only our minds become broadened, but also some other parts of our anatomy (after long hours sitting on tour buses and the like). Hopefully, no such problem af- fected Doreen Adams and Betty Reader, our members who were among several area residents who took an "arts and crafts' tour of China last summer. They provided us with a beautiful display of crafts and souvenirs and a very interesting slide show. The group toured museums and craft factories as well as visiting historical sites and scenic points of interest. Although their presentation showed the beauty of China, it also served to underline that this is a country rebuilding and pulling itself into a more modern age. As China has only recently been opened to tourism (of a sort) the tourists often found themselves to be "main points of interest to the "locals." This might also explain why many of us could not easily name a Chinese city for Roll Call (that, and the fact that many well known names have been changed). Ge Hearin A id (Centre ¢f Port Perry Dr. E. Mueller"s Office - 24 Water St. S_, Plaza, Port Perry, Ontario LOB 1NO After the presentation we were treated to Ginseng and Jasmin Tea as well as several kinds of Chinese pastries and sweets. All in all, it was a super evening enjoyed by everyone. The main order of business was discussion as to the use of funds rais- ed by our summer auction. A com- mittee is looking into replacing some of the tables at the Scugog Island Hall. Barbara Ross sug- gested that we look _ into having a ramp for wheelchairs installed at the front door of the Hall. #his sug- gestion was well received and a mo- tion was passed to inform the Hall Board of our desire to help fund such an undertaking. On Tuesday, March 11 and Tues- day, March 18, we will be sponsor- ing a Home Decor Planning Workshop which will cover Home Decorating, Making Balloon and Roman Shades and Candlewicking. The course will be held at the Scugog Island United Church from 7 p.m. to approximately 10:30 p.m. each night and will be conducted by Lilo Czilock (985-8635) and Penny Kutlik (985-3730). The cost will be approximately $6.50 to cover material costs only. If you are in- terested in attending, please feel free to call us! Dennis J.
