| PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 4, 1986 -- 11 A A ------ ------ CBC reporters inspire fear in hearts of mice, SIPING men, and other folks (From page 10) or would it, too, appear on national "TV? And, more to 'the point, what would I SAY when the camera started to whirr and Kevin Tibbles stuck a mike in my face? Would I clam up? Would I freeze? Would I get everything straight? Would I stutter? Would I babble, as I am do- ing now? Fact is, when it actually came down to the nitty-gritty, I found I was stuck with a unnatural com- pulsion to tell the truth. Or at least, the truth as I saw it. Painstakingly, I went over every word in my head before I said it, weighing, measuring, making sure I was telling the truth, the whole truth, and, well, you know the rest. Never have I been so preoccupied with the truth. It was an obsession, and yet, looking back, I can't real- ly remember what it is I-said. I do have this sinking feeling I in- sulted a lot of blue collar beer drinkers but I can't be sure, Which is why I'm so afraid of losing my job or being crucified in front of the post office. I keep thinking of that muscular guy in a white T-Shirt, hurling beer cans at the TV screen, using words I thought were abolish- ed with the coming of religion. And I'm thinking of reading up on how to de-fuse the kind of explosives irate beer drinkers attach to cars. Seriously, I am concerned about reaction to what I said. It's probably the same concerns other people voice when they ask to read a story I've written before it's printed. When they ask that, I always assure them it'll be okay. Trust me, I say. And I do trust the folks at CBC. Trouble is, in my compulsion to be honest, I might have offended a few people. I hope not, I really do, but I'm hoping they'll remember that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Neil Bradley is, more than likely, suffering the same kind of paranoia I'm going through right now. He was interviewed at the Sunderland police station last Friday, and boy, was he nervous. Watching him, I was reminded of a student just before writing an ex- am. He couldn't sit still, moving for- wards and backwards in his seat, rubbing his hands together and fingering his ever-tightening collar. During the actual interview, he sat stone straight in his chair, his neck and face red above his starch- ed police collar, his answers as methodical and unemotional as any police report I've ever set eyes on. When it was over, he made ner- vous jokes about being demoted to a fourth class constable and asked the Staff Sergeant twice if he ha done okay. | Staff Sergeant Doug Aird merely nodded and smiled, as if relieved that it wasn't he who was being interviewed. I wasn't present when anyone else from town was interviewed but I'm willing to bet they were just as up- tight as me and Neil. The only people who were pro- bably relaxed were the members of SADD, who have dealt so much with the national media that they are old hands as blase about TV as they are about their own homework. In any case, if you've been wondering, this story will appear on CBC's Newshour Thursday March 6th at 6 p.m. I will appear in Mexico Friday March 7th. MAXIMUM VIDEO presents the classics ...
