In our first game early Sat. mor- ning we met Whitby and beat them by a score of 6-5. For a while it look- ed as if the girls were still asleep. Tracy Pelow, in goal, made some good stops and certainly kept us in the game. Kelly Menzies unassisted put us on the scoreboard first and then Amy Parliament from Shannon Fox gave us a 2-0 lead. However, Whitby came back to tie the game. Denna Lovering from Kelly gave us the lead again. Shannon from Lynd- say Dutkewich and Tanya Towns made the score 4-2 for us at the end of the first period. Whitby scored early in the second period to bring them within 1 goal. Amy unassisted gave us a 2 goal lead again. A cou- ple of minutes later Whitby came within 1 goal and then came back to tie the score. With just a minute left in the game, Denna from Lyndsay gave us the win and made us breathe a bit easier. In the second game, later in the morning, we met a club from Mississauga, who are going to be the Provincials from the Southern Region, and beat them by a score of 12-6. The girls were all wide awake for this game and all came out fly- ing. They were all passing the ring and checking well. We got on the scoreboard early and never looked back. Mississauga is known as a come from behind club and the score could have been much closer if Tracy hadn't made some good stops i net. Denna had 3 goals, 1 assist; Lynd- say 2 goals; Amy 1 goal, 3 assists; Kelly 2 assists; Shannon and Tanya Towns 1 assist each to end the first period with a score of 6-3. In the se- cond period Lyndsay had 2 goals, 1 assist; Amy 3 goals, 1 assist: Den- na 1 goal, 1 assist; Shannon and Kelly 1 assist each to round out our scoring. Winning this game place us first in our pool and meant we played Mariposa who were secord in their pool. Early Sunday morning we met Mariposa in our semi-final round 'and beat them by a score of 11-6. Again Tracy kept us in the game by making the necessary stops. We got on the scoreboard early and by the end of the first period we were ahead by 7-2. Scorers were Kelly 1 goal, 2 assists; Denna 4 goals, 2 assists; Shannon 1 goal; Amy 1 goal; Kim Finley 1 assist and Lynd- say 2 assists. We started off the se- cond period with a goal and then allowed Mariposa to come back with 3 goals before we finally scored again. Scorers in the second period were Denna 3 goals; Lyndsay 1 goal, 1 assist; Christina Hicken and Kim Poppleton 1 assist each. Winning this game placed us in the Cham- pionship game against Mississauga. They had played Kitchener in their semi-finals and had beaten them in overtime to go to the Championship game. On Sunday afternoon we met Mississauga for the second time and came home Champions by a score of 14-12 in overtime. Mississauga scored the first goal within seconds of the opening whistle. It was a see- saw battle throughout with one team or the other coming from behind to tie and go ahead. Port was behind and down in spirit a couple of times but the chanting of the parents and fans seemed to make our team come alive. Port was behind 9-7 at the end of the first period. Scorers in this period were Denna with 6 goals; Amy 1 goal, 1 assist; Kelly and Tanya 2 assists; Lyndsay, Amy, Chrissy and Jennifer Morden 1 assist each. During the second period we tied the game, went ahead, fell behind and then tied again. During the last few minutes the girls seemed to get their second breath and pulled it together to tie the game and put us into overtime. In an exciting climax to a great weekend Amy from Den- na and then Denna from Amy scored to earn us the Championship trophy. Congratulations, you all worked very hard this weekend and you certainly deserved the trophies. Your hard work at checking, pass ing and skating paid off. Two special highlights of this game were Lynd- say Dutkewich earning a pin for assisting on 50 goals this year and Amy Parliament whose overtime winning goal earned her the game ring for scoring her 50th goal of the season. Congratulations girls. We now continue with our playoffs when we meet Mariposa at the local arena on Monday, March 24 and when we host Whitby next weekend for the league- championship. See you at the arena! Malmont Atoms are up against the wall On March 22 and 23, the Malmont Farm Atoms played their first two _ games of the Ontario final against Napanee the same club they faced one year ago and beat them for the Championship. This year the Napanee club is not taking the Green Machine lightly as in both games 1 and 2 they have shown they have a strong club and defeated the Malmont Atoms by a score of 3-1 and 5-1, respectively to take a solid WAYNE HUTCHINSON Phone 985-8724 PORT PERRY WINDOWS & DOORS 985-8724 .
