Tweens gave it their best at tournament in Barrie The Chris Allen Aluminum Tweens travelled to Barrie the weekend of March 21, 22nd where they played hard and fast Ringette in the first Barrie Ringette Tournament. Their first game was Friday night against the Barrie Tweens. It was a fast and exciting game with the scoring back to back for both teams. However, with 20 seconds left in the game the score was 6-6, Barrie Tweens found the hole and won the game! Nice try Port -- you played a good game -- all of you! Scoring for this game were Lisa Levy 5 goals and Heather Lawrence 1 goal. Assists were by Nicole Slack, Heather Lawrence, Chris Mueller and Lisa Levy. Thanks to Port Perry parents for helping out in the Time Keepers and Penalty Boxes. The second game for the Port Tweens was at 9 o'clock the follow- ing morning where they met with the Whitby Tweens -- one of their league teams they play regularly. This team could play fast Ringette with great checking and passing. The Port Tweens played a good game against this team however, lost the game 10-3. A good try by all girls -- it was a "great effort! Scoring for the Port Tweens was Lisa Levy. 2 and Nicole Slack 1. Assists were by Lisa Levy, Heather Lawrence and Nicole Slack. Hope everyone enjoyed this Tournament. Thanks to all parents who came and supported us and the coaches, Jim, Rob and Mary-Lou. Assists were by Nicole Slack, Heather Lawrence, Danielle Cooper, Nicky Beare, Lisa Levy and Sylvia Durward. Great game girls -- some great passing in this game. The final game in playoffs was on March 29th against the Whitby Tweens. Unfortunately the Port Tweens can only beat these girls in Tournaments. Whitby won this game 8-7, however, it took some hard playing for them to do it as the game was tied up three different times. Goals were by Lisa Levy 4 and Nicole Slack 3. Assists were by Nicole Slack, Sylvia Durward, Lisa Levy, Linda Crawford, Chris Mueller and Nicky Beare, Thanks for a great season girls -- we enjoyed working with you all. See you at the Banquet on April 19th. From your coaches, Jim Lawrence, Rob Cooper, and Mary-Lou Mueller and Manager Marg Lawrence. inb The team left town by bus on the Thursday night and played their first game Friday at noon. This game was played in a very cold and square arena against the Vikings of Longlac, representing the northeast region. After a sluggish first period, Goreski's came to life and won the game 4 to 0, setting the pace for the rest of the tournament. The next game was to be played at six p.m. in the warm and incredi- ble Cornwall Civic Center. Here Goreski's played the Hustlers from the southwest region and easily handed them a 4 to 1 loss. The next game was played Saturday at three in the afternoon. The opponents for this game were the Easy Riders from the central west region. This game was bet- ween the only two undefeated teams and it proved to be a top quality match. With Goreski's goaltender, Ray Gibson, playing an outstanding game between the pipes and the game ended in a 0 to 0 tie, which meant overtime. In the overtime, Dan Taylor scored to give Goreski's a 1 to 0 lead. Shortly after that the Easy Riders tied the game at one and the pressure was on. With a fine clear- ing pass from Randy Sullivan, Dave Dickson scored the winning goal and gave Goreski's a berth to the finals and a chance at a gold or silver medal. The championship game got underway at eleven a.m. on Sunday. With Goreski's being undefeated the opponents would have to defeat . them twice, and when the game began the opponents were the Easy Riders once again. In this game it was the Easy . Riders being victorious by a score of 3 to 1. They simply outhustled the Goreski team and got a couple of lucky goals. Now each team had a win and the stage was set for one last game, with the winner taking home the gold. The game began at three p.m. in IGA - 4 Consumers Gas - 4 These same two teams finished the season 1-2 on the standing and were not about to let the other get the first break, as both teams played a tough, offensive and defensive checking game. In the second period IGA broke the ice first on Mike Griffins' goal after taking a pass from Eric Douma. The Gas Works were not to be de-railed, as they battled back halfway through the second period on a three way passing attack. Derek Slack to Chris Menzies then a shot on net, and Adam Danter on the rebound. One minute later Neil Mark scored after he stole the puck off Bobby Orr's stick and made no mistake in beating "Hobby" low. Two periods over, Gas Works in front 2-1. IGA came back early in the period to tie the game at 2-2 on a quick goal by Eric Douma after Mike did the spade work to earn a well deserved assist, as well as playing a smart front of an estimated crowd of 3500. With the Easy Riders finishing with the silver medal in 1985, it would be up to the team who wanted the gold the most to prove it. The game began and with 12:35 still remaining inthe first period, Goreski's had a 4 to 0 lead. The rest of the game was a hard hitting af- fair with Goreski's coming out on top with a 4 to 1 victory and captur- ing the gold medal. oo In the closing ceremonies of the tournament, Goreski's received a few more awards than just the gold medals. Tom Powell, who played well all weekend received the award for tournament M.V.P. Also out of a six man all-star team, the Goreski's Insulation team placed three of their own players on it. These players were forwards Tom Powell and Dave Dickson with Dan Taylor as a defenceman. Con- gratulations to these players and to the rest of the team for their efforts in all the games. Goreski's Insulation would once again like to thank the three pickup players, Tim Cochrane, Wayne McGuigan and Charlie Dennis for their effort in all the games and especially the final game. Also a thank you to all the fans and people who supported the Goreski team in Cornwall. A special thank you would like to be sent to the sponsor, Ken Goreski, for his support in making the year and the weekend such a fantastic affair. Special Note: Out of a possible six gold medals at the provincials, the Central East Region came home with 3 goals and 1 silver. Winners of the Gold Medal were: Goreski's In- sulation from Port Perry; The Satellites, Intermediate girls from Barrie and the Oshawa Bantam . Girls Select team. The Silver Medal went to the Oshawa Bantam Boys Select team. This shows the calibre of Broomball in our Region. - Bantam H.L. teams attle to the finish game throughout. The Gas Works didn't take long to get back out front on Frank VanVeghel's goal with Darryl Bradt assisting. Then Bradt came right back to put Consumers up two goals after taking a pass from Neil Mark. With five minutes remaining, IGA put on a push, with Ed Toffin setting up Tim Kyte in front, and he made no mistake. Then Gerry Douma broke in on the left side, and took a pass from Mike Toye who made no mistake as he beat Steve Graham -- IGA kept up the pressure and just about took the lead -- but some great goaltending in the Gas Works nets. Both goalkeepers came up strong and turned aside many at- tempts by the offensers. The final score, a 4-4 tie -- next game Satur- day, April 5 at 9 a.m. Both these teams wil be at their best, as they'll play until there is a winner. Come on out and give these teams your sup- port -- and you'll be rewarded with the best hockey in town -- Banta House League hockey.
