24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 1, 1986 Bantams hold series hammer-lock by Mark Barkey On Friday March 28, the Goreski Insulation Bantams won their se- cond game against Tilbury to take a 2-1 lead in this battle for the All- Ontario fitle. The arena was packed with energetic fans cheering and yelling for the home team and of course, Pierre Leduc with his air-horn. The game started off at an amaz- potential and maybe even beyond that, as Port tied the game at one on Tilbury's dynamite defenseman scored his second of the night to give Port the lead, assisted by Mark 'Barkey and Brad Traves. goal This ended the second period the Port squad received a loud and heart-warming cheer as they retired to their room. When Port got into the dressing room, they were addressed by speeches and pointers by both coaches and were constantly reminded to hit and remember that 'it's never over." With this fresh in the minds of all players Port came back out ready to play a physical disciplined third period. Port had most of the play and kept good pressure on the visiting team but it was Tilbury who struck first in the third to come one step closer to tying the game up. A new fresh line poured off the bench of Port Perry and they mov- ed the puck into enemy territory quickly and scored just fourteen seconds later than Tilbury did, on a deflection goal from Jamie Menzies. It was Greg Stapleton who passed the puck to Andrew steele on the point and he fired a hard, low slap- shot that Jamie deflected right under the crossbar. Port now led 5-3, and that's the way it stayed until the end and Port was up, two games to one. The next game of the series was slated for 2:30 the following Satur- day. The weather, being the way it was, seemed more fit for a baseball game, but again our dedicated fans piled into the arena for another tense and exciting game. The first period again saw Tilbury netting the first goal at the 11:36 mark to get on the scoreboard quickly. The game went on and then five minutes later it was Shawn Nanay scoring for Port assisted by Clair Cornish and Andrew Steele. With Port on the rampage and cheers that shook the arena from our fans, Mark Barkey scored fif- teen seconds later to give Port a 2-1 lead. Jamie Menzies and Greg Stapleton drew the assists on that one. With Port keeping the puck in Tilbury's end, Jamie Menzies got a pass from Stapleton and then he fed Barkey who was all alone in front of the net and he scored his second of the afternoon and Port now had a 3-1 lead. The first period was winding down but before the buzzer went off, Andrew Steele split the visitors defence and let fly a slapshot that went under the pad of the goaltender and Port went into the second period with a 4-1 lead. Brad Traves and Brad Menzies were -. awarded the assists on Steele's goal. Tilbury with some offence of their own, scored at the 12:52 mark of the second period to cut our lead to two. Port battled right back on a goal from Mike Sorley as he banged one in unassisted. Tilbury was obvious- ly not at all happy with the way things were going and they scored to make it 5-3. Tilbury can come back quickly and they did, as they scored another goal twenty-one seconds later to come within one. The second period had less than two minutes left but Port fought back and clicked for two goals just twenty-seven seconds apart. The first of the two was scored by Mike Sorley assisted by Clair Cor- nish and Shawn Nanay. The second and last goal of the second period was from Brad Menzies assisted by linemates Jeff Oke and Warren Geer. The players went off the ice with a comfortable 7-4 lead and all the enthusiasm in the world. When the teams came out again, cheers and clapping were close behind with Grudge match! On Thursday March 27 the Sport- sland Juniors hosted Mariposa in a playoff game. The Mariposa squad came out on top by the score of 4-3. Both teams skated and played well with excellent goal at both ends of the ice. Scoring for Port were Kim Loud- foot, Jen Pelow and Kelly Calloway. Assists went to Val White with 2 and Kim Caudle, Rachel Traynor, Sherry Harris and Michelle Beare with 1 each. This brings the season down to 1 final game and probably the biggest grudge match of the year. The Juniors will try to defend against the skating abilities of their parents. Tilbury had many golden opportunities to score in the late going of the third period but our goalie Brad Bricknell was once again hot and he stopped the opposi- tion cold. When the game was over and I was in the lobby, I heard some fan say "I couldn't believe the Port Perry goalteder." So it's hats off Novice House League playoffs games on home ice and now have a 3-1 ham- merlock on the best of seven series.
