Last week the Durham Central Competition was held with nine schools being represented. The following ribbons were won by Cartwright girls -- in intermediate - Jennifer Fletcher - 3rd on Floor; 4th in Vault; 5th in Beam; Heather Rowntree - 2nd on Beam; 6th on Vault. Heather will advance to Durham Finals. Karen Doyle placed 8.0 on the floor. In Junior Optional - Tara Cearns - 5th on Floor and Shelley Frayer 3rd on Floor. Jason Argue had previous- ly advanced to the Durham Finals when he received 6th on the Vault. Congratulations. Ingrid and Dave Larmer went on a Guernsey Tour of farms and other highlights to Indiania from Thurs- day until Sunday. Several local couples attended the Broomball banquet in the Odd- fellows Hall on Saturday evening. The team is sponsored by Beacock's Hardware. Recent visitors with Nancy and Bob Bryans were Pat and Grant Parliament and Dwayne from Fenelon Falls. Ivan and Gwenyth Thompson hosted a gathering on Sunday in celebration of Bill Thompson's 35th birthday; Mrs. John Venning's 75th birthday; and Mrs. Ella Venning's 80th birthday. Mrs. Jean Millet of Vancouver has spent a week with Neil and Noreen Malcolm and is visiting her father, Mr. Stanley Malcolm who is in Port Perry Hospital. Ten members of the Morning UCW met at the home of Alma Duff for the April meeting. Lois Luke opened the meeting with a poem about a Robin. Eleanor Werry gave a worship on the theme, "The Sidetracks of Life." Ruby VanCamp gave an excellent programme on Apartheid in Africa with a film strip. A bus trip in June was discussed. Meeting closed with benediction. Garden Club to host spring flower show On April 1st Pine Ridge Garden Club held their annual bake and plant sale. Many thanks to our members and Hanks Bakery for their donations which made both sales a success. Guest speaker for the evening was Mrs. Mary Pearlmutter, who gave an in- teresting and informative talk on organic gardening. Winners of the monthly competition were 1st Anne- Julia Bajema; 2nd Pat Kingstone; 3rd Henka Bandstra. The door prize of a $15.00 gift certificate donated by the Gate Restaurant was won by Tina Wolters. Next meeting will be held on the second Tuesday, May 13th to give our spring flowers an ex- tra week of growing for the Spring Flower Show. Guest speaker for the evening will be Mr. Edgar James on Bees. A bus trip is planned for May 30th to Cullen Country Barns in the mor- ning where we will have lunch and then leave for the Metropolitan Toronto Zoo. The bus will leave - Nestleton at 9:00 a.m. and leave the zoo at 4:00 p.m. for home. Cost of tickets are $6.00 for members and will be available at our next meeting May 13th. We already have 14 names sign- | ed up for this trip and as our bus trips are always a success and seats go fast, please get your tickets ear- ly. Membership costs are $6.00 fami- ly; $4.00 single. Following a nece gingerbread dessert, the meeting was opened by Jean Adams reading a poem written by a native Indian and which was given at the Annual Presbyterial. Jean also took the devotionals reading from 1 Cor- inthians 9-Verses 24 and 25 -- Are we honestly fighting the battle of self- denial? The hymn 'Take Up Thy Cross' was sung. Roll call was answered by a show- ing of old pictures of our ancestors. The program was given by Flora Samells and dwelt on Life After Death -- What do we think Heaven will be like? Sections were read from the book "Life After Life' by Moody and also from a more recent book "The Other Side of Life." Following a short business session, the meeting closed with Benediction.
