ba ii 10 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 22, 1986 Switzer Motors now open Cowboy Bob Switzer, how did you get your nickname? "I really don't know why," the mustachioed car salesman grins. 'I can't even ride, that's the funny part of it." . While he can't ride a horse, he's an expert when it comes to four-wheeled transportation, which, is why he opened up his own used car business in Port Perry a week or 80 ago, Switzer Motors Ltd. at the corner of Highway 7A and Water Street. The nickname actually came from the years he spent working at Enterprise Ford in Whitby, where the owner was called '"The Lone Ford Dealer" and advertising was " decidedly western in flavour. What's this? Cowboy Bob Switzer without a hat? Well, Port Perry's newest used car dealer may not have a cowboy hat but he does have a corral full of cars to sell. They all have that western flair." "Cowboy Bob" has been a part of him ever since, although on the day he was photographed by the Port Perry Star, there wasn't a single cowboy hat or a pair of spurs in evidence. What was in evidence was a lot full of new-looking used cars, and the owner of a new business, chock full of enthusiasm and fresh ideas. And it all seems to be working for him. In the first week, he sold three vehicles. ; "I'm doing way better than I ex- pected," he admits. It's not too surprising, however, when you consider his background. He's spent 15 years as a service manager, three years as a body shop foreman and is a licensed mechanic. All told, he's devoted 25 years to the automotive field. "I know the business well, inside out and backwards, because that's all I've done," he says. He started out in Lindsay when he was 15 years old as an apprentice mechanic and hasn't looked back. "When you're 15, you're car crazy. Those were the days of graf- fitti, when all you needed was a hot-rod Chevy, and you spent all day tuning it up in your driveway,' he recalls. His only break from the car biz came when he turned 21 and joined a gospel quartet called the Switzer Brothers Quartet, and travelled all around North America singing at high schools, universities and coun- try fairs. Still, the lure of the automobile proved too much and it wasn't long before Cowboy Bob was back in the car business, always with the dream in the back of his head about bran- ching out on his own. That dream became a reality a | short time ago when he heard about the opportunity of renting land at the corner of Water St. and 7A, what he calls an "ideal location" for his business and too good a break to pass up. He also knew he wanted to work in the Port Perry area. He's livedon Fralick's Beach for 13 years and can't think of a better place to live and work. "I thought it would be nicer work- ing in my hometown," he says. "This whole thing is quite an adventure.' Maybe not the same kind of an adventure as a rodeo, round-up or a shoot-out, but an adventure just the same. 'THE MERRY WIDOW' IS coming to town ... Enjoy a Five Course Dinner at ...
