IEA Bo OB i Nog oA i . a me REPT IRR NA A SR i To Durham Health Unit will assess andchange policies The chairman of the Durham Region council health services com- mittee says the Region's Health Unit will be making changes in the way it handles rabies incidents like the one that hit Port Perry recently. defended the way the Health Unit staff handled the incident. Speaking at the meeting of council April 23, councillor Hamre said "I think the staff (Health Unit) handled the situation well. But because of the Port Perry case, staff will be reassessing (the procedures) and probably changes will be made." * She went on to say that in similar incidents in the future, the Health Unit could use the media (local papers, daily papers that come in- to the community and radio) to in- form the public about potential health hazards. At last count, 123 people from Port Perry were receiving anti-rabies shots after indirect contact between March 25 and April with a stray dog that had rabies. The Health Unit has come under criticism for not notifying the public quickly enough after the dog was positively diagnosed as having the disease. The matter was raised at the Regional council meeting April 23, by Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor who asked councillor Hamre what the Health Unit policies are when deal- ing with incidents like this. In responding to the questions and defending the Health Unit staff, councillor Huiure noted that this case was unique because the dog in question had been a 'friendly stray.' not displaying any outward signs of the disease, and this was the reason it came in contact with so many people, most of them children. In reply to another question on whether Durham Region might join several other municipalities in for- cing all pet-owners to have their animals vaccinated against rabies, councillor Hamre said the Health Services staff is exploring this possibility. She said local municipalities might be asked to see proof of rabies shots as a condition for issuing a dog licence. But there could be problems in trying to enforce this and an add- ed problem that domestic cats are not licenced the way dogs are, yet can contact the disease just as easi- ly as dogs. The dog in question which carried the disease and came in contact with so many people in the im- mediate Port Perry area was a black mongrel, part Collie/Lab, Only 28 days until summer freedom! by Susan Lehane 152 days down, 28 to go. According to a chronological report of the events surrounding this case, the dog was first diagnosed April 4 as having "clinical rabies' and nine people began having shots. The dog was caught at the 8th Con- - cession of old Reach Township and Simcoe Street, north of Port Perry. The positive confirmation of rabies came April 7 after examina- tion of the skull.
