Ten per cent tax increase is likely Scugog Township council is strug- gling to keep the 1986 tax increase at under ten per cent, but it appears to be a losing battle. "I don't think there are many places left to make any (spending) cuts," said Mayor Jerry Taylor after council had spent the better part of three hours Monday after- noon trying to trim the estimates in the municipal budget. As it stands now, the local Township budget will hike taxes by just over ten per cent (compared with an increase of about three per cent locally in 1985). Mayor Taylor told the meeting he would like to see the local increase at under ten per cent, and at one point Monday he suggested taking funds from one of the reserve ac- counts and putting this into general revenues. To reduce the 1986 budget by one per cent, the council will have to trim about $18,000 from the budget, and all members agreed there is not much left to trim. The original estimates when the budget process began several weeks ago, had tax increases of just over 14 per cent. That figure has been reduced by council to just over ten per cent. Councillors at the local level are running into the same problem in 1986 encountered by both Durham Region and the Durham Board of Education, both of which have pass- ed budgets which will hike proper- ty taxes about ten per cent. On an average home in Scugog this year, the Education tax hike will be about $50, with another $14 increase in Regional taxes. A ten per cent increase in taxes at the local level would add a further $15 or $16 to the total tax bill. For taxation purposes, the "average home in Scugog has an assessed value of $3,000. After kicking the budget around for almost three hours Monday afternoon without any significant changes, councillors instructed treasurer Kathleen Harper to prepare the final spending estimates for approval at the coun- cil meeting May 5. Good turn- out at the by Bernice Dobson The April meeting was held in the church with a good attendance of 15 members and 1 visitor present. Ruby Fielding and Irene Lamb were in charge of devotional and lunch. Ruby gave a reading 'Jesus is the man for me" Hymn 123 was sung. Irene favoured us with several selections on the organ. Irene and Ruby presented a skit on "The Lord's Prayer." It was beautifully done with the seven col- oured candles in keeping with the theme. The devotional was brought to a close with prayer by Irene. The president Pat Kingstone had charge of the business. Dorothy Aird had a lovely display of Indian han- diwork, that her daughter Carol Aird collected when she worked with the Indians in Northern Manitoba.
