24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 6, 1986 Sports Moving up to Oshawa and District loop "a Home opener May 12 Greenbank Gamblers ready to roll The 1986 fastball season will see the Greenbank Gamblers trying their luck in the Oshawa City and District Campbell Division which is the top league in the area. The Campbell Division will con- sist of seven teams with three from Oshawa and four teams from the surrounding area. Oshawa will be represented by Oshawa Butlers (seniors), Oshawa M.C.L. (juniors) and Oshawa A.C.L. the 1985 cham- pions of the City and District Brady Division. The outside teams will be Port Perry Legion, Whitby Legionnaires, Sutton Irish House and the Green- bank Gamblers. 'After winning the North Durham League Championship in four of the past five years, the Gamblers felt they would like to test the water in the Oshawa League for a year. This is a big step for the Gambler Squad as the brand of ball in the Oshawa "A" division would com- pare favourably with any league in Ontario. Most of last years Gambler Team is returning with the exception of Gary Baker who is running the Oshawa Butlers Senior Team, Dar- ryl Hudgin who is not playing this year and Chris Cookman who has lined up with the Port Perry Juniors. Back for another year is the Greenbank pitching staff of Russ Korbak, Ken Goreski, and Roland Osske. These players had outstan- ding seasons in 1985 and led the Gamblers to their best season ever. Don Phinney and Hugh Johnston will again be the team catchers and the team is still looking for a third catcher to replace 'long time" Gambler player Gary Baker. The infielders will be Trevor Till, Brian Myers, John Foster, Don Beaton, Brian Till, Rodd Real, Steve Foster and Terry Till. The outfield will have Neil Rodd, Dennis Romeril, Greg Rodd, Ray Meisner and George Redshaw on patrol. By leaving the North Durham Fastball League, the Greenbank Team is losing many of their tradi- tional rivalries very quickly. Cer- tainly the Gambler Port Legion games will continue to excite the fans. All games in The Oshawa League will be nine innings rather than seven as in the past and all games in Greenbank will start at 8:00 p.m. rather than 8:30 p.m. Should be another great season for fastball fans on Monday nights Meet the Cornish Cougars, the toughest boys basketball team in Durham Region! Cornish defeated Coronation P.S. 27-14 and then beat Whitby Sr. 24-15. The semi-final game was the toughest with a close 17-16 victory over EB. Phin on a foul shot by Chris Paxton with 5 seconds remaining on the clock. The players are now looking for- ward to next year when they hope to carry on the fine tradition of ex- cellent basketball shown ty the in- termediate teams.
