Since childhood we've been told that sugar rots our teeth. Candy monsters of all ages pay no heed. Can you have your cake and eat it too? Sugar does promote tooth decay. That fact has been proven over and over again. Of all the food we eat, sugar or sucrose is preferred by the bacteria in the mouth. When bacteria are fed they produce acid which eats away at tooth enamel creating cavities. The length of time the sugar re- mains in the mouth is more impor- tant than the amount of sugar eaten. The longer acid remains in the mouth, eating away at tooth enamel, the greater the danger. Every sweet snack unleashes a new acid attack. A candy every half-hour is far worse for your teeth than a boxful all at once. Be kind to your sweet tooth and satisfy its cravings at mealtimes. Between meals avoid sugary snacks to avoid destructive acid pro- duction. Remember sugar goes by many names: sucrose, glucose, fructose, honey, molasses, white and brown sugar all have cavity potential. Foods that stick to the teeth, raisins, dry cereals, cookies and soft candies are the worst tooth of- fenders because they stay in contact with the teeth for long periods and are hard to dislodge from cracks and fissures. Soft drinks, coffee and tea with sugar, and fruit juices are also damaging especially if sipped frequently between meals. For dentally safe snacks substitute milk for milkshakes, fresh fruit for dried fruit, popcorn or bread and butter for cake and cookies, sugar-free soft drinks for regular soft drinks, and sugar-free § gum for its sugary counterpart. Sugar substitutes can be a real boon to your teeth. Saccharine and cyclamates, limited to tabletop "sweeteners, are safe for teeth but their overall safety is in question. Aspartame, found in may low- caloric products, does not harm. teeth. And sorbitol does provide food for the bacteria in the mouth but at PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 6, 1986 -- 4) Sugar and the well-fed tooth a lower level than sugar. One of the most promising sweeteners available, which does not cause tooth decay, is xylitol. 4 This natural sweetener, found in many fruits and vegetables, has been shown not to feed the bacteria which causes tooth decay, to main- tain the pH in the mouth at a safe and acid-free level, and reduce decay-causing plaque building up in the mouth. Another potential source of decay- causing sweets are liquid medica- tions, such as cough syrups, throat lozenges and chewable vitamins which are heavily flavoured with sugar. Many health care profes- sionals favour. replacing <ugar in drug products with substitutes such as xylitol to reduce damage to the teeth. : Can you have your cake and eat it too? Yes, if you have it with a meal; yes, if you brush your teeth after every sweet; and yes, if you make use of sugar substitutes which do not feed bacteria in the mouth. Making healthy donations to the Port Perry Community Hospital is getting to be something of a habit for Reg Renouf. The Caesarea resident purchased a brand new television set for the patient's lounge last week. And about a month ago, Reg donated funds for new equipment in the physiotherapy department.
