They were among the . first to have the pleasure of atten- ding the first Annual Seagrave "Lawn Tractor Derby. This exciting event took place at the Seagrave Park where 6 highly competitive en- tries vied for the championship title and of course, the greatly coveted trophy, presented to the first place winner. All contestants, fortified with the required 2 minute consumption of 24 ounces of liquid refreshment, lined up at the starting point, eagerly an- ticipating the challenge lay before them. Amid cheers of encourage- ment, the moment of truth arrived and one-by-one the machines roared off, leaving in their wake a cloud of black smoke, an amazing amount of dust and Rodney Jones. Rod, a Seagrave resident, got off to a rather slow start when his machine failed to respond to his mechanical know-how and gentle words of encouragement. His per- sistence paid off however, when his machine roared to life and he join- ed his competition, already far in the distance. Rod's machine bore a confident sticker which stated "I May Be Slow But I'm Ahead Of You," much to the amusement of the spectators, the only ones "behind" him. Al "Lightning" Deckert, representing Mariposa Estates, showed extreme co-ordination and expertise as he sped around his own private course, giving him a first lap time of just 723 seconds. In hot pur- suit were Steve Caulder, Robinglade Estates, driving his powerful vin- tage Mastercraft machine, powered by 8 h.p.'s and prayer and Ray Desautels, a worthy opponent from ~ Seagrave. Unfortunately, especial- ly for "Lightning Deckert who finished in first place, all 3 were dis- qualified for failing to follow the of- ficial course. Don Beacock, a Seagrave resi- dent, along with his expert pit crew, had the whole show down pat, and with flawless 1st. and 2nd. laps, was declared the winner. Congratula- tions Don! Albert Van Beek, the entry from o/ OCCASJON! The CAR TRUCK for You MOTORS Hwy. 7A & Water Street Pleasant Point, earned the second place title with his artful manage- ment in and out of the numerous mudholes. Due to the fact that this was a rather low budget, actually, bordering on "cheap" operation, Albert did not receive a trophy for his out-standing accomplishment. The organizers of the derby, pioneers in their field, would like to thank both the contestants and the spectators, who made this event a 'class act." A special thanks to Fred Puckrin who gave permission for part of his land to be used for the course. We hope to see everybody back again next year, to once again share in this wonderful experience.
