Blackstock and Area News by Joyce Kelly This is the time for graduations and Blackstock is no exception. On Friday evening Cathy and Gord Paisley attended the spring Con- vocation exercises for Mohawk Col- lege where Craig received a Diploma in Radio and Television Broadcast Journalism. Durham College held their Convocation Ceremony in Civic + 1ditorium in a very impressive service on Satur- day. Among the large number of graduates was Alan Petrie receiv- ing a Diploma in Finance. His pro- ud parents David and Kathleen Petrie also attended. Another local graduate was Julia Vanderheul who received a Diploma in Food and Beverage Management. Julia graduated on the Dean's List. Attending to offer congratulations were her mother, Ann Vanderheul | and aunt, Eleanor Gibson. Her father Peter was unavoidably de- tained at a work project in Northern Ontario and was unable to attend. Heartiest congratulations to Craig, Alan and Julia! Families with graduates please make it a point to notify me of the ceremony =nd details so I can report it. Best Wishes to Kelly McKee and | Robert Mulligan, Pontypool who were married in a beautiful ceremony in the Blackstock United Church on Saturday. Following the wedding, a reception was held in Nestleton Hall. Mrs. Elva Toms celebrated her birthday quietly on Sunday when many relatives called to wish her many happy returns. She enjoyed two long distant telephone calls---one from her daughter, Helen Dorrell in Northern Ontario and the other from her girlhood chum, Helen Byers of Ottawa. Happy Birthday Aunt Elva! Condolences to Tallya and Denzil Moore and Todd on the passing of her grandmother in her 100th year. Mrs. Marie Ashton (Begley) pass- ed away after a lengthy illness. For many years Marie and her husband Bruce Ashton lived on Purple Hill and took an active part in communi- ty life. Sympathy is extended to her sons Larry and Dennis and daughter Doris. The funeral was held on Saturday. The General Meeting of Blackstock U.C.W. met in the Chris- tian Education room on Wednesday evening, May 21 with twenty-three members and four visitors present. Marion Larmer opened the meeting with an Inuit prayer and called on Grace Hall to lead in a short sing- song. Grace did so in her usual vivacious manner setting the mood for an enjoyable evening. Jean Adams introduced Wendell White who taught for some time in the Nor- thwest Territories and is presently part of the Quin-Mo-Lac staff. With great enthusiasm he outlined with the aid of slides, maps and samples of Indian crafts the life, the homes, the customs and the concerns of these native peoples. His respect and admiration for the Inuit was evident and he made each of us more aware of their needs and their need for our understanding. Grace Hall thanked Wendell for his presen- tation and over coffee were able to meet and talk a little more with him. Business was conducted following this programme. Ruby VanCamp reminded us of the need for woolen blankets for the Inuit Indians in Labrador. If you can help out with good woolen blankets please contact Ruby VanCamp or Grace Hall. A number from this area attend- ed a bridal shower for Susan Slemon at the home of her cousin Mrs. Dee Trewin of Enniskillen last Saturday evening. The bride-to-be received many lovely gifts before replying fittingly. After a tasty lunch and social time was enjoyed. Best Wishes go with Mrs. Valerie Garland and family on their recent move from our village to Oshawa. A warm welcome is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Eric Huntington and fami- ly who have moved into Valerie's house the former Mervin Graham house. : Everyone will be having callers this week as the Census will begin to be taken in order that we may all be counted on June 3.
