I 22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 27, 1986 Sports To succeed Grant Williams who stepped down at annual meeting Doug Moore elected Minor Hockey president Former NHL superstar Bobby Orr (at right) shares a laugh with Wren Blair, the man who brought Orr to Oshawa as a teen- -ager in the 1960's to play Junior hockey with the Generals. Orr and Blair were among 31 Oshawa sports figures inducted into the Hall of Fame in that city in a ceremony last week. Plaques honour- ing the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame members will be on perma- nent display in the Civic Auditorium. Doug Moore has been elected president of the Port Perry Minor Hockey corporation for the 1986-87 season. Mr. Moore, who served the organization as first vice-president for several years, defeated Don Steele in a vote at the annual general meeting held May 25th at the Township building in Port Perry. Grant Williams, who has been president for the past several years decided to step down and declined to accept the nomination for another term. Close to 70 people attended the an- nual meeting Sunday evening, an in- dication of the way minor hockey has grown in Port Perry, and a far cry from meetings in the past when 20 people in attendance was con- sidered a big crowd. One of the major changes made at the meeting was to initiate a two person vice-president system, each having specific duties. In the past, there had been first and second vice- president positions. Larry Lee was voted vice- president in charge of operations, which take in the day-to-day runn- ing of the organization. Doug Scott was named vice-president in charge of development and skills. The em- phasis in this area will be on pro- grams designed to improve skills for coaches, referees and players. Also at the annual meeting, Walt Sandison was returned as treasurer. The following persons were elected as directors: Don Steele, Glen McCoy, Dave Bourgeois, Dave Ball- ingall, Lorne Traves, Marg White, Don Harper, Grant Laird, Ron King and Carl Fitzgerald. . Those present at the annual meeting agreed that the Association will become incorporated, and from now on will be known as the Port Perry Minor Hockey Corporation. The reason for the change is to protect executive members, direc- tors, coaches, managers and other volunteers from personal liability in the event of accident claims in the Keep it cool in the parks The Lindsay district provincial parks opened to visitors on May 9th, 1986. As in the past, the four camp- ing parks, Balsam Lake, Emily, Serpent Mounds and Darlington, will be subject to an alcohol ban from May 9th to May 19th inclusive. This is an attempt to ensure that the peaceful experience most campers expect in provincial parks is attain- ed. Everyone who visits a provincial park is entitled to a peaceful and relaxing time; the ministry is at- tempting to ensure all visitors understand their responsibility to fellow visitors and do not cause disruptions through loud music and excessive noise at any time. After May 19th, 1986, a registered camper and guest may have alcoholic beverages on the campsite only. No one is permitted to drink or have an open container of any type of alcoholic beverage in any other area of the park, including park roads, beaches or picnic grounds. The Ministry of Natural Resources asks our park visitors to remember the one basic rule in On- tario Provincial Parks, "Have respect and consideration for your fellow visitors and the park ATJ downed 2-0 Port Perry A.T.J. Tools opened the 1986 Soccer season on Wed, May 21st with a 2-0 loss to Bowmanville Dynamos. The Dynamos scored on a corner kick, followed a few minutes later by a deflection. Our boys never gave up and fought back. Mike Willams & Mark Coseway combined on several good plays but just couldn't score on the Dynamos goalie A solid effort by our boys made this a very interesting game Mat- thew Coyne & Matthew Allardyce were solid performers in goal environment.' Three Toronto area men learned the hard way that Balsam Lake Pro- vincial Park is not the place to hold a noisy party. Donald Karch and David R. McBain of Scarborough and Craig H. Pryce of Toronto appeared in Victoria County Court on March 21, 1986 to face charges of excessive noise and failing to leave the premises when directed. The three men were camping at Balsam Lake Provincial Park on the Labour Day week-end in September 1985. Due to the loud noises, abusive language and the lack of consideration for the peace of fellow campers, the three men were charged by park wardens for making excessive noise. The three were evicted from the park, however. they refused to leave and were charged under the Trespass to Property Act for failing to leave the park when requested The three individuals were con- victed of the charges and fined a total of $339. courts. One suggested change in the con- stitution that was defeated called for a ban on parents coaching an all star (rep) team if the parent has a child playing on that team. There were more than 430 youngsters registered with the Minor Hockey system in Port Perry last season (30 teams) and ex- ecutive members are expecting that number to increase this fall. Ice time at the Scugog Arena will con- tinue to be in very short supply, especially since the number of teams could increase to 36. To meet the demand for ice time, it is ex- pected that 7:00 a.m. week-day practises will continue this coming season. Legion dumped 9-3 by Oshawa Port Perry Legion had a quiet week playing only one game in Oshawa, losing to the Merchants 9-3, to fall into a tie for first place :with the Oshawa Juniors. Port started pitcher Todd Wilbur who pitched a solid 3 innings before tiring in the 4th inning. Giving up six runs of which four were unearned, due to two fielding blunders. Paul Graham relieved and pitched the last 4 innings. Port Legion managed to bang out nine hits off the Bill Michael/Jim Chilvers combination pitching for the Merchants. Leading the way for Port was the rejuvinated Ken Bryant rapping out 3 hits with single safeties to Rick Evans, Rob Evans, Dave Dickson, Todd Wilbur, Jack Bright.and Lawrie Williams. Future games have the Legion team in Greenbank on Monday night and home to the Oshawa Juniors on Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. Montreal's Super Fan Wearing his bright red Montreal Canadien jersey, Pierre Leduc of Port Perry was in a mood to celebrate Saturday evening after his beloved Habs won the Stanley Cup. Pierre, who is an ardent sports fan locally is an even bigger fan of teams from Montreal. He now predicts a "triple play" this year as the Expos will win the World Series and Als will take the Grey Cup this fall. Pierre also says the Habs weekend victory should be enough to silence all those hard core Leaf fans in the Port Perry area, for the time be- ing, at least. a a
