Tn SE ia 9 dR Ss A dna ahi Ge ra EE he RL AR What Richard Larocque is doing here is a partial curl up, part of the Canada Fitness testing for young people. Richard, 12, knows all about curl ups. He did 1,071 in 25 minutes last Friday and only stopped because he had to catch the school bus. And he wasn't puffing a bit 12-year old Richard Larocque decided he wanted to do just a few extra curl-ups during Canada Fitness testing at Prince Albert School last Friday. But when he was finished, Richard had done 1,071 of the curl- ups. And he said he could have easi- ly kept going, but he had to catch the school bus home. A curl-up is something like a sit up. A person lies flat on the floor, draws up the knees, puts both hands behind the head, then brings the up- per half of the body to near sitting position. It's an exercise designed to strengthen the stomach muscles. Teacher Pam Fis, who counted all 1,071 of the curl-ups, said she had never seen anything like this. "He wasn't even tired or puffing." To give you an idea of how tough 1,071 curi-ups would be, the stan- dards set by Canada Fitness say a 12-year old boy should be able to do 64 to get an award for excellence. Most kids are lucky if they can do 40. Richard said he didn't specifical- ly set out to do more than 1000 curl- ups, but he really wanted to beat his younger brother Shawn who did 301, which in itself isn't too bad by any standards. Port Legion paid a visit to rival Greenbank and were thoroughly trounced by the host 8-2. Greenbank broke a scoreless tie in the 3rd inn- ing by scoring 3 runs and followed this up with 4 more runs in the 4th inning & Port scored 2 runs late in the game, but never challenged starting pitcher Russ Korback. He kept Port off balance all night with his excellent control. Port pitcher Lawrie Williams started, but was relieved by Paul Graham in the 4th inning. Graham lasted until the 7th inning before Todd Wilbur took over to finish the game. Port's hitting was led by Jay PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesdav. The pipe, which would be used to carry sewage into Lake Scugog in the event of a major break-down in the town's sewer system, is just beyond the right-centre field fence at the north ball diamond on Water Street. For the past several months, the Township has been dumping fill in- to the lake to extend the playing field, but this sewer pipe has been a major stumbling block to com- pleting the extension of the field. On Monday, councillors received three estimates of the cost of exten- ding this pipe into the lake, and they ranged from $35,000 to just over $70,000. There had been a sense of urgen- cyto extending the field by the end of this summer, as Port Perry is slated to host the Ontario In- termediate C Championships early in September. If the north field is not large enough, arrangements may have fo be made to play some of the games in Greenbank. At Monday's meeting, there were suggestions that the sewage outflow pipe could be covered with earth and the field extended over top of it. 1st win. Paul Graham pitched the last 4 innings giving up 2 hits in a solid relief appearance. Offensively the Legion squad pounded out 12 hits in the one sided game. Todd Wilbur not only pitch- ed well, but was hot at the plate get- ting a single, double and triple in § at bats. The rest of the hits were delivered by Dave Dickson, Larry Pilkey and John Butler with two each, with singles going to Lawrie Williams, Jack Bright and Pete Christie.
