12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 10, 1986 Couple smashes record Terri Gibson of Port Perry and Robert Baird of Sunderland have set a new record in the couples events in the Canoe the Nonquon race held on Saturday. resident class, covered the 20 mile course in three hours, eleven minutes and 12 seconds. Not only did Gibson and Baird bet- ter their own record in this class, they shaved more than a minute off the previous best time in the open couples division set in 1982 by two paddlers from Guelph. This was the only record to fall on Saturday, as just over 70 canoes entered the event, which began in 1969 as a fund-raising venture for Cracknell - Port Perry - 3:20:37. 4th - Dave Booth & Joe Giroux - Port Perry - 3:30:24. Although Saturday was dull and overcast with light rain during the morning, the lack of any strong winds made paddling a little easier for the entrants. However, weed conditions in the Nonquon River were described as very heavy. The event this year was marred somewhat by a prankster who plac- ed a sign directing canoeists the wrong way at a tributary in the river. Several entries followed the wrong-way sign and wound up in a swamp. A few got discouraged and decided to drop out at this point. The sign had the words "Scugog This is the infamous sign placed in the Nonquon River by some Hysterical Society" printed insmall gmart alec prankster that directed several canoes the wrong way. letters. The best time of the day (over the river course) was turned in by Mike Freeman of Port Perry and Bill Hurst of Seagrave at 3:08:54 in the Men's Resident class. In the Men's Open, Woodville residents Paul Starr and Brian Starr cruised home in 3:37:57. The fact that only about 70 entries took part in the race this year was a major disappointment to the organizers. It's not known at this time just how much will be raised for the Museum, but the figure will be much lower than previous years. Organizers say the committee will be considering changes for next year to try and boost the interest in this annual event. The following is a list of the top finishers in the main categories.
