I ay --_------ TE Lawrie Williams throws a three hitter at the Gamblers Port Legion finally defeats Greenbank Port Legion started the week off on a winning note by defeating Greenbank Gamblers at home 5-1. Port's Lawrie Williams tossed a nif- ty 3-hitter to go the distance for the win. Greenbank's starter Ken Goreski pitched a strong 3 innings before being replaced by Roland Osske in the 4th inning in a scoreless game. The Legion squad pounced on the young reliever for four quick runs before he was relieved by starter Goreski after getting only two batters out. Part way through the 5th inning a tiring Goreski was replaced by Russ Korbak who finished the game. Port Perry played a rare flawless . game on defense with some spark- ing plays recorded by short stop Dave Dickson and second baseman Grant Jackson. On the offensive side, Port had 10 hits with the Williams Brothers, Lawrie and Jay, leading the way with 2 hits a piece. The pitching of Scott Foster for Norm Tripp and the pitching of Scott Wylie of Valu Mart was evenly matched. The gloves of Chad Garvock and Jasen Lawson were also equally hot. Jasen's 6th inning double drove in the winning runs for Valu Mart's 11-10 victory over Norm Tripp. May 28 In the home town park of Seagrave they were beaten 14-5 by the Gulf team. Jeremy Hartin had solid pitching for the Gulf team and went 4 on 4 in hit time. Brent Harper had a good glove as well as hitting. For the Seagrave team Tom Dur- - wood contributed some good hitting while Kevin Vale had a hot glove. It was a close battle between Alan Siding & Irwin Smith with Alan Siding being victorious 6-3. Mike - Olaisen was good with his glove & bat while Steven Stiles had 2 solid hits that scored the wins for Irwin Smith's team. Chad Brown & Scott Airey held the Irwin team to only 3 runs with their defensive plays. June 2 The game between Irwin Smith & Valu Mart saw a lot of good hitting & fielding with Irwin Smith winning 19-10 over Valu Mart. Adam Johnston had solid hitting at bat & Chris Linton had a good night on the pitchers mound & at bat. The solid pitching of James Gouldbrun helped Valu Mart stay in the game while a running catch by Shawn Larocque made an important out. There was good base running throughout the game and a diving catcher put out in a rundown between 3rd and home plate. June 4 Cartwright in their first game of . the season of Port Perry beat Seagrave at home 30-7. Chris McLeod & Craig Rowntree both had a couple of home runs helping their team to victory & Mark Janson for the Seagrave team had two good hits in their offensive drive. Adam McTaggert made some good cat- ches during the game. The contest between Alan Siding & Norm Tripp saw some exciting moments in a see saw battle that ended up in a 7-7 tie. Dale Bradbury made some good catches to keep the game close. Troy Hope benched due to illness was still out there to sup- port Norm Tripp's team. On the ' Siding side Billy Sandiford drove in some runs while Robbie Romano hit 'a home run for his team. In a make up game due to a previous rain-out Port hosted the eague leading Whitby Legion team and came up on the short end of an 11-6 score on Sunday night. Port's starting pitcher, Paul Graham got off to a shakey start giving up 7 runs before being lifted with two out in the second inning. Reliever Lawrie Willaims came on and pitched the remaining 7 innings giving up an ad- ditional 4 runs. Whitby's John Annis struck out 13 Port players to earn the victory. nis was in control most of the night and the only threat of making, game close came in the late innings when the game was out of reach. The Legion attack was led by Bill Owen with a homerun and a single; additional homeruns were hit by Rick and Rob Evans with singles go- ing to Jay and Lawrie Williams, Jack Bright and Pete Christie. Monday night Port travels to Oshawa to face the Oshawa Juniors and on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. they play the Oshawa Merchants Sr. 'B' club with local lad Doug Christie manning first base for them.
