26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 10, 1986 Community shocked by tragedy Blackstock and Area News by Joyce Kelly The community was shocked and saddened by the tragic death of Brad Guernsey on Friday evening in a traffic accident. Sympathy is extended to his parents Gary and Marilyn Guernsey and sisters Wen- dy and Kelli in their terrible loss. On Sunday evening a memorial service led by Rev. R. Rose was held at the Wagg Funeral Chapel which was filled to capacity. Former Cart- wright High School principal Gor- don Paisley delivered a fitting eulogy. The funeral service will be held today (Monday) at Cherry Valley near Picton. Better health is wished for Earle Trewin who is in hospital - first Sun- nybrook and Port Perry undergoing tests for his serious headaches and for Bart Vanderheul who underwent surgery in Oshawa Hospital. Former teachers and students of Purple Hill School will find it hard to believe that it is five years since the first reunion. We had a lively sing-song which everyone took part in. The roll call was answered with a memory of Blackstock. The Blackstock W_I. exhibit at the fair will be entitled Family Leisure of years ago. We have been in- vited to two sister Institutes to share their meetings, both were accepted. The business was lengthy. Meeting closed with a memorium to one of our old and dear members, Alma Taylor. The annual Mother and Daughter Banquet was held on Monday, June 2 at the Blackstock Recreation Cen- tre. Commissioner Linda Fletcher welcomed over one hundred Brownies, Guides and Pathfinders, their mothers and 'adopted' mothers and their leaders. Cathy Carden played for the sing- ing of the God Save the Queen after which Ruby Van Camp said Grace. A delicious chicken and salad dinner prepared and served by Brenda Bryant and her helpers was enjoyed. Susan Clarke proposed the toast to the Guide Movement which was replied to by J. Boyce. Jill Van Camp proposed the toast to the ' Mothers which was replied to by Carol Doyle. It was announced the Awards Night will be held on Sunday, June 22 at Blackstock United Church at 7 p.m. Joan Swain, Wendy Dyer, Brenda Bryant each. received their 5 years Service Pins and Jessie Gunter received her 20 years Service Pin. Appreciation was voiced to these leaders and especially Jessie for her many years of service. The Unit Presentations were 'made. Arlene Malcolm leader of Caesarea Brownie pack told of their activities with the Brownies singing '"'Ontario."" Susan Clarke of Blackstock Brownies explained the year in review posted on the wall for all to see. Wendy Dyer, Blackstock guides presented Mrs. Byers and Mrs. Sleep with gifts as well as elaborating on the group's events of the year. Joanne Lee reported on the Blackstock Pathfinders. Two of the girls will be participating in ex- changes - Esther Kelly will be representing the Area in England and Wales and Julie Byers in Penn- sylvania. Jennifer Fletcher has been chosen as a Junior Leader for the Let's Explore Camp - an Inter- national Camp for Disabled and Able Girls at Doe Lake. Gifts were presented to Guide Leaders - Joan Swain, Wendy Bentley and Wendy Dyer. Dressed dolls will be displayed in cabinets in CCPS just outside the library. A volunteer is needed to store the patrol boxes as Mrs. Lazenby is leaving. The evening was closed with the singing of 'Day is Done" and '0 Canada." Fiona Smith, Hall of Carnduff, Strathaven, Scotland, is currently staying with the Kelly Family, Blackstock as an exchange from Scotland with the Junior Farmers Association. We hope that she en- joys her stay in Ontario. Blackstock L.O.B.A. ladies are holding a social evening Wednes- day, June 11 at 8 p.m. in the Town Hall Muriel Wotten is showing pic- tures on New Zealand. Tricia Vissen is giving a demonstration of Jafa Skin Care. Also there will be Penny Sale Table. Everyone welcome and lunch provided. Draw on the Com- forter, Socket Set and Lawn Chair will be made on this date: On Monday Cartwright High School staff and students went on a school trip to Toronto. There they visited Casa Loma, Parliament Buildings, Osgoode Hall and MacKenzie House. The day was con- cluded by watching the Blue Jays ball game when the Toronto team defeated Minnesota. Congratulations to Dale and Janet Van Camp on the arrival of their daughter, Mary Ruth - a first grand- daughter for Merrill and Norma Van Camp. Janet's mother Mrs. Ford of Meaford visited for a few days. Many local Junior Farmers at- tended a successful Zone Dance held at Newcatle Town Hall on Friday evening. Heather Fenton'of Guelph was a weekend guest of George and Bren- da Bryant and family. Do not worry if your Census Form has not been picked up. In rural areas the deadline is not until June 27. Many local reelatives and friends including her grandmother Mrs. Ella Venning attended the wedding of Laura Jo Hunter and William Atkinson in Newmarket on Saturday. Mrs. Verna Chapman, Port Perry held a tea on Saturday afternoon in honour of her bride-to-be daughter Linda Chapman. Among those who attended from this area were Lin- da's grandmother, Mrs. Susie Har- ris and her aunts Mrs. Jean Mahaf- fy and Mrs. Lorna Edgerton. The annual United Church Sunday School Anniversary was held on Sunday with a fine congregation. Superintendent Judy Gilbank welcomed everyone after which the children sang several numbers. Guest speaker Mrs. Buelah Buchwald delighted old and young alike with her presentation using her motley crew of lovable puppets. Following the service, a lunch and social time was enjoyed by all. The Senior Citizens Card Party was held on Tuesday with 10 tables and the following winners. First - Freda Ashton, Second - Minnie Sale, Third - Fran Gibson, Fourth - Edna Manns, Fifth - Clarence Masters, Sixth - Betsy Staniland and Low was Edna Larmer. Draws were won by William 'Forder, Minnie Sale and James Emerton. Be sure to report any happenings to me before noon on Monday.
