Neil Rodd, Brian Myers, John Foster and Den- nis Romeril each had two hits to lead the Gambler attack. On Thursday night the Gamblers lost a 14 inning marathon to the Port Perry Legion Squad in a game that lasted over three hours. Greenbank used Roland Osske, Russ Korbak and Ken Goreski on the mound in this game while Port Perry had Paul Graham, Lawrie Williams and Ken Irvine on the rubber during the game. Standing Deer hunting season to be extended in several areas The success of the selective harvest program introduced in 1980 has allowed the Ministry of Natural Resources to extend the 1986 deer hunting season in several areas in Ontario. "The positive impact of our selec- tive deer harvest program, coupled with relatively mild winters in re- cent years, has allowed Ontario's deer population to double within the last six years to an estimated herd of 200,000,"" said Natural Resources Minister Vincent Kerrio. "The extended hunting season will allow more recreational oppor- tunities for hunters in the coming season, as well as reducing pro- blems caused by deer-such as crop damage and deer-car collisions." The following Wildlife Manage- ment Units (WMUSs) in the Algon- quin region will have new archery seasons: 48, 57, 58, 59 and 60A. Till as they consistently left runners stranded on the basepaths. Terry Till and Hugh Johnston each had two Gambler hits. Dave Dickson led the Port Perry attack with Ken Ir- vine picking up the win in relief. At the Richmond Hill Tournament the Gamblers won five straight games en route to the championship game but came up short in that one, as they lost 3-0 to Richmond Hill Pontiacs. They started off strong in the opening game as they drubbed Alliston by a 17-7 count, behind the pitching of Ken Goreski and Trevor Till. Greg Rodd led the Greenbank batters with four hits including two "'out of the park' home runs. Game two saw Ken Goreski and Russ Korbak team up to shut out Richmond Hill Pontiacs to the tune of 2-0. (this was the same team that defeated Greenbank in the cham- pionship game) Brian Till had a pair of hits with single safeties going to Neil Rodd, Don Beaton, Rodd Real, Hugh Johnston and Roland Osske. Osske drove in the winning run with a key pinch hit single in the bottom of the fifth inning. The final game on Saturday saw Russ Korbak and Roland Osske combine on a five hit 4-1 win over Oshawa Curleys with George Red- shaw leading the Greenbank hitters with a perfect 4 for 4 game. Sunday morning saw the Gamblers take on the Richmond Hill Royals and Russ Korbak allow- ed them only 4 hits during the game. But some poor fielding had given the It was a 'bad news, good news" 'weekend at Mosport for Challenge Series driver Mike Rivet in the Den- nis Anderson IROC Chev Camaro. The bad news came on Saturday in the third qualifying: lap when Rivet had the first serious accident in his racing career. He flipped the car on its roof. The good news came when team members managed to straighten out the car and repair the damage in time for Sunday's final race. And Rivet, whose confidence was not rattled in the least by the mishap, climbed back behind the wheel and finished fourth in the final. For the first time in four Challenge Series races this season, Rivet finished in the money on Sun- day and picked up a cheque for $2,000. More important, the fourth place finish moved him into fourth place overall in the important series point standings. And with four events still to go this summer, Rivet is within striking distance of the point leaders. v Saturday's mishap took place on Corner Two at the Mosport track as Rivet was attempting to pass another car on the inside. He was forced to brake sharply and he spun Royals a 3-2 lead as the Gamblers took their last bat. Don Beaton (who was injured in the first game of the tournament) pinch hit to lead off the inning and was hit by the pitcher. Terry Till tan for Beaton and scored the tieing run as Hugh Johnston doubled down the right field line. Then with 2 out Brian Myers drove the ball to left field to score Johnston with the winning run. The semi-final saw 'Greenbank versus Etobicoke and again the Gamblers had to come from behind a two run defecit. Ken Goreski and Russ Korbak pitched the Gambler win with Rodd Reals two run homer the big blow. The championship game was played with only a fifteen minute rest for Greenbank as the tourna- ment had been delayed by a heavy rainstorm Sunday afternoon. The two teams each picked up six hits in the contest but the Pontiac team from Richmond Hill scored their 3 runs in the second inning with - the help of a pair of Gambler fielding miscues. Greenbank left 7 base runners stranded during the game which proved their downfall. Once again Ken Goreski and Russ Korbak col- .laborated on a fine pitching effort with Russ Korbak being voted the outstanding pitcher in the tournament. Now it's back to Oshawa City and District Play for Greenbank who currently share the league lead with the Whitby Legionaires. Rivet recovers from flip over to finish 4th off the track. It appeared as if he had the car back under control when the two outside wheels hit some mud and flipped the IROC on its roof in a foot of water. Rivet was not hurt, but track marshalls had to scram- ble to pull him from the car which was taking in water. At first it appeared as if the damage might be extensive, but team members hauled the car back to the Dennis Anderson Chev Olds shop in Port Perry where they spend much of Saturday night repairing the windshield, fixing a broken suspension system and hammering out the dents. By the next day, the car was ready for the final race. Richard Spennard won Sunday's event at Mosport, followed by Peter Lockhart, Scott Maxwell and then Rivet. The next event in the Players Challenge series of races will be Ju- ly 18-20 at the CNE in Toronto as part of the Molson Indy weekend of racing. Rivet team manager Mike Rysiecki said the-two week lay-off from competition will be welcome as it will give them time to work on the IROC Camaro and get it in top shape for the Toronto race over the Indy course.
