ans, -- AG a I ------ Free roses, coffee and doughnuts attracted a large crowd to the new Sears catalogue store in the Port Perry Plaza, where the official open- ing and ribbon cutting took place last Thursday morning. District manager Jim dePencier, manager Terry McClurg, Mayor Jerry Taylor and Jean Edwards were on hand to cut the ribbon. See story for details. / PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 8, 1986 -- 15 Sears opens door to brand new location It looked like a line-up at a movie theatre, but it wasn't. People lined up for nearly half an hour to be the first few customers in- side the door of the new Sears Catalogue Store location, in the Port Perry Plaza. The doors to the new location opened to the public for the first time Thursday morning at 9:30, and within minutes sales clerks were busy serving free coffee and donuts, handing out roses to the first 50 customers and taking orders. Special guests Mayor Jerry Taylor and Sears district manager Jim dePencier, from Kingston, were on hand to help cut the ceremonial ribbon, along with store manager Terry McClurg. Mrs. McClurg was more than pleased with the turn-out and with her new location. The old one, she says, just wasn't big enough to house thie amount of business Sears was doing in Port Perry. The new store, located in the just- completed new building at the plaza, is more than 1,000 square feet big- ger than the old Queen Street loca- tion, with an open concept layout and easier access for both staff and customers. Fine weather for Institute auction Scugog Island Area News by Mrs. Earl Reader The 'Head' U.C.W. finished their spring and early summer meetings with a very successful pot luck sup- per, Wednesday July 2. The Women's Institute certainly chose fine weather for their annual Auction. In fact it was too sudden a change to hot summer & discourag- ed some people who would love to at- tend. But this group of hard work- ing, country women were not to be daunted & stayed right with their various duties which brought suc- cess as usual. They are all to be ad- mired and appreciated. In turn, they realize they also owe appreciation and thanks to the community for donations and patronage as well as to Mr. Edgar Brown for his great clean up job. Some city people have an idea that country life can be very boring. Just ask these women or any of the church groups. Winner of the Women's Institute Quilt Draw, Mrs. Vivian Rider of Port Perry. I'm sure Mrs. Rider will enjoy many warm nights this winter with this elegant quilt. For us, summer has just begun ~ but last week we were reminded about the Port Perry Fair in the not too distant future and it is not too early to turn your thoughts in that direction if you wish to enter exhibits. : Don't forget the various meetings at the Scugog United as mentioned in last weeks paper. It is with sad- dened hearts we learn we are going to lose Rev. Brian Robinson & his wife Carol at the end of September. Two years have passed too quickly and we have enjoyed and profited from every minute of their work, association and friendship. We are all looking forward to another outdoor chicken barbecue at Scugog United like last year's. It was like an old fashioned Garden Party. In mentioning John & Edna Beckett's 3 week trip this summer to include Expo, we didn't realize they were more extensive travellers. The first 3 weeks were spent in England & Scotland. Then after 1 week at home they were off again on a 3 week motor trip to Van- couver, visiting John's relatives along the way in different provinces & climaxing it at Expo. That's a lot of exciting things to remember in 1 summer but an ideal way to spend retirement. Our thoughts have been with Reta Rodman lately, a well known former resident on Con. 6 E. First she lost a sister-in-law and then a dear sister. Then her concern and ours has been for another sister Maudie Travell who has experienc- ed 2 heart attacks & hospitalization. We trust brighter days are ahead. "ALL? ALL Annuals - Alyssum to Zinnias. WE 59¢ GROW THEM ALL ...... box ALL?"
