Last month, the m Board requested that $2.1 in provin- cial funds ear-marked for construc- tion of a new Port Perry elementary school in 1986 be transferred to a Pickering project because the Board had not been able to find a site for the school here. What has councillor Hall upset is that apparently, the Durham Board does not yet have a site in Picker- ing for the new school next year. Man charged after officer fires warning shots A 36-year old Oshawa man is fac- ing three charges following a late . night incident near Sonya in which a Durham Police officer was forc- ed to fire two warning shots. A Regional Police spokesman said the incident began about 3:30 a.m. July 3 when an off-duty Metro Toronto police officer on his way home spotted a man standing in the middle of Victoria County Road Two waving a red cloth. The Metro officer stopped his car ang the man told him he had ditch- ed his car and his wife in the front bulance arrived, the man became belligerent and threatening, and demanded that his wife be driven to hospital. The man then pulled a revolver and pointed it in the direction of the Regional Police officer from a distance of about 15 feet. The officer pulled out his service revolver and ordered the man to drop the gun. When he refused, he fired a warn- ing shot. After a second warning shot the man dropped the gun and was over-powered by the Regional Police officer and the Metro officer who witnessed the entire incident. The weapon pulled by tl.. man turned out to be a pellet gun replica of a .357 Magnum pistol. Police seiz- ed a CO2 cartridge and 19 pellets. The woman in the car turned out not to be the man's wife, but the wife of a friend. She was treated for cuts and bruises suffered in the accident. Durham Police have charged Jac- ques St. Pierre of 92 Helen Street, Oshawa, with pointing a firearm, weapons dangerous to the peace, anc dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing injury. The accused man, who was on parole at the time of the accident, is being held in custody for a court appearance July 10 in Ajax. Councillor Hall wants to know why the Board transferred the funds to the Pickering project without a uitable site, when the Board withdrew from the Port Perry school project for the same reason. "If they don't have a site in Pickering, why withdraw the money from Port Perry," he stated. The same kind of questions are asked by Bobbie Drew of Port Perry in a letter to the editor in this week's Port Perry Star. Mrs. Drew is ac- tive with the Parent Teacher's Association in this community. Earlier this spring, the Durham Board and Scugog Township negotiated for a seven acre school site in the Port Perry Fairgrounds, land owned by the municipality. The Board was prepared to start con- struction of the badly needed $2.1 million elementary school this fall with the doors open for classes in September, 1987. $ However, that deal fell to pieces in May when members of the Port Perry Agricultural Society refused to surrender the lease it has with the Township for the fairgrounds. The Board of Education was not able to find an alternative site for a new school in Port Perry and re- quested that the 1987 capital grant be re-allocated to Pickering for a new school there. Councillor Hall told the Star Mon- day morning he at least wants the whole issue discussed at the local council level and he wants some answers from the Durham Board of Education. 4 %.
