é -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tosidey, July 8, 1986 Lawn bowlors bid farewell to Queen Street NN by Stan Rickard Why do all the white clad people look so happy when it is the end? These thirty-two bowlers par- ticipated in a final tournament at the Queen Street site on July 2, 1986. Lawn bowling began at this Queen - Street site in the first decade of this century and has been a familiar spectacle here for over eighty years. On this historic occasion teams came from Cannington, Oshawa, Port Perry and Whitby. Although there was a degree of sadness to end an eighty year old connection between the Lawn Bowlers and the old site there was also a feeling of happy anticipation for the use of the new site on Sim- coe Street, North. During the past two years the membership has grown from 25 to 75. All members are looking for- ward to the date of July 7, 1986 after which all Lawn Bowling will be at the new site. The Club expects that this will be another beginning of an active period of Lawn Bowling for the future. The new facilities are located at Simcoe Street North and Regional Road 8. The public is invited to the Official Opening at 1 p.m. on August 23, 1966. a... ORR on A Hog farmer honest, hard-working Dear Sir: I have known John Schewaga for several years. In that time he has worked on projects for me, and sharecropped my land. At times John owed me money, which he never failed to pay. I have known him as a hard-working, honest man. His problems, in my view, stem from his loyalty to his family, a lack of sophistication in business, and the general decline in commodity and farm prices, which have affected our entire farm industry. The sophistication in business should have been provided by the government Farm Assistance Pro- gram advisers, and by the bank. Un- fortunately, the former, being civil servants, had no stake in the mat- ter, not even their jobs. For their part, the banks were just as anxious to cash in on the boom in com- modities and farm land as anyone. Now that those profit sources have collapsed it's the little guy, the farmer, who is left on the hook, as usual. If John Schewaga misrepresented his assets to obtain loans it was out of desperation, and he should be treated with compassion. To date, actions against him appear vengeful and arbitrary. How is society serv- ed by jailing this family bread- . winner like a common criminal, and throwing his wife and child onto the welfare roles? The very fact that John has broad community support demonstrates that the court is not reflecting the "will of the people in this matter. It is a sad comment on our legal system that his is not an uncommon occurrence. Rich and powerful cor- porations and violent criminals More questions about local school Issue Dear Sir: To those who have been following the saga of the new school or rather the lack of the new school in Port Perry, it is interesting to note an ac- tion taken on June 23rd by the Board of Education. "The Ministry of Education has approved the Board's request to transfer 1986 capital funds from the Port Perry elementary school pro- ject to the unnamed Boddy PS. pro- ject in Pickering. The Board will proceed to acquire a suitable site in Pickering for the new school." I find it inconceivable that the Board has re-routed funds from Port Perry (because of the lack of a suitable site) to Pickering where there is, at present, no suitable site _either. We were told that develop- ment would have to start im- mediately in order to have the school open in 1987, we were also told everything was ready to go in Pickering. Knowing that the Ministry had allocated funds for this area originally, how could it happen that Scugog got such little support to keep the project going here. Yours truly, Bobbie Drew, Port Perry. Chatterbox (From page 4) or after the dance, | managed to steal the recipe. As.the old saying goes, try it ---- you'll like it! C.C. Split 1 oz. Canadian Club 4 oz. Amaretto one scoop vanilla ice-cream \s peeled banana > 4 oz. Pineapple juice Put all ingredients in a blender and mix until smooth. Pour over crushed ice into a fancy glass and garnish with an orange slice, a cherry and the other half of the Enjoy! , banana. seem to be treated with a gentler hand than the average person, caught up for the first time in the in- tricacies of the law. . John Schewaga has been found guilty of fraud. He is bankrupt, and lives in poverty, working almost around the clock every day of the week. No one profits from his im- prisonment, and the taxpayer loses twice; paying to keep him in jail, and to support his family. After we break his pride, will he return to be a productive member of society again? If not, we lose a third time. John's lawyer asked for mercy from the court. I would ask for a rarer commodity on appeal. Com- mon sense. Sincerely, Glen E. Morehouse, Seagrave. EDITOR'S NOTE: John Schewaga was found guilty on three counts of fraud totalling $125,000 and was sentenced to 12 months in jail. He is free on bail pending an appeal. Unfair to Joe Clark Dear Sir: It was very unfair, in my opinion, to equate the up-and-down career of Joseph Clark with that of Richard Nixon. * Nixon was, at best, a shady character, while Clark has never done anything underhanded. His mistakes were due simply to inex- perience at that time; next election, I hope, people will see him as our new Prime Minister. Sincerely yours, Warren T. McCready Greenbank, Ontario MICHAEL FOWLER is pleased to announce that he has taken over the practice of law formerly carried on under the name, KELLY, JERMYN, ZULY & FOWLER Barristers & Solicitors and that he will be continuing to practice law at, 217 QUEEN ST., PORT PERRY 985-8411 under the name, MICHAEL L.
