He was trapped underwater with the canoe overturned. He said he didn't panic at first, thinking a gentle tug would free the sneaker. It didn't work. He tugged again and still he was stuck. Then the panic set in. Near- ly out of breath, he said he thought to himself "this is it. I'm going to die." He managed to get an arm over the gunwhale of the canoe and pulled just enough to get his mouth out of 'water for a gasp of new air before going back under. Still his foot was lodged. Suddenly his shoe came free and the danger was over. He said it was a beautiful day in mid-summer, not a cloud in the sky, and certainly not the kind of day one would think about the danger of drowning. He said the whole incident lasted less than a minute. | Not only did he nearly drown, but he very nearly scraped against the underwater rocks in the rapids. | Swimming, boating, water-skiing, fishing, even wading in shallow water on a hot day are great sum- | mer past-times. There are yearly baseball games, a car rally, Hallo- ween breakfast and Christmas party. New Little Brothers & Little Sisters apply to be part of the program and current Big Brothers & Big Sisters retire due to a variety of factors which range from a change of jobs, starting a family of their own, to moving out of the area. The North Durham Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization is unique in that is usually has more volunteers on its waiting list than there are Little Brothers/Little Sisters wanting a match. This year the Big Sisters need more Little Sisters to expand the program and the association feels that not enough people in our area are aware of the organization and the benefits Big Sisters can and does offer. - If anyone would like more infor- mation, please feel free to contact. any of the following.
