a Ee. 28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 22, 1986 Mystery photos baffle confused contest judge If someone took a picture of Port Perry, you'd be able to identify it, right? Well, what if that picture was a close-up of a fire escape"? Would you be able to tell what building it i is from? And what if that picture was snap- ped through 'hat appears to te a long, dark tunnel"? Could you guess the subject to be the Canadian Tire Store? Fooling local folks was what the "Mystery Photo Contest' at Scugog Memorial Public Library was all about. The idea was snap photos of local, public places in such a way as to confuse the viewer. The fun started on July 3rd when photography buff Phil Walmsley (of the One Hour Photo Store) taught a basic photography skills seminar to an enthusiastic group of children at the library. They learned simple techniques designed to improve their photos, in- cluding how to hold a camera, why you shouldn't shoot into the sun, and how to look at subject matter in a new light. Then the kids were set loose in order to come up with a collection of mystery photos. All sorts of local scenes showed up in the finished results, including the library, various churches, parks, the defunct mini-cinema, restaurants, light standards, sdwer grates, businesses, and the side of Gord Lewis' gas station. The Gord Lewis photo, taken by Janna Williams, 10, was chosen the overall winner of the contest because of its good composition, col- our and, of course, because of its ability to stump judge Phil Walmsley. Janna was awarded an instant camera and a package of film. "It was a tough choice but somebody had to win,' Mr. Walmsley pointed out. 'All of 'the photos were good. In fact, they wete better than some of the ones adults send to my store to be developed." Janna Williams can hardly wait to try out her new camera and film, courtesy of One Hour Photo. She won the package by enter- ing the Scugog Memorial Public Library's Mystery Photo Contest. Do you know where this photograph was taken? Janna Williams, 10, snapped this picture .somewhere in Port Perry and it was enough of an enigma to win her first prize in the Mystery Photo Contest. See story for the correct answer. Ontario Murray Grey holds The Ontario Murray Grey Association will be holding their 11th annual Field Day and Barbeque in Victoria County on August 9, 1986. The host for the days events is Mariposa Murray Grey Farm, R.R.1, Manilla, Ontario. The farm is located approximately 15 miles East of Lindsay on Hwy 7 and 2 miles South of the intersection at Hwy 46. Murray Grey Cattle originated in the Murray River region of Australia. The colour of the breed is various shades of grey, from silver to very dark grey. The history started in 1905, when a white shor- thorn cow gave birth to a grey calf when mated to a Angus Bull. Subse- quent matings with Angus bulls pro- duced calves that were always grey in colour. The peculiar colour and fleshing of these animals persisted until their merits led breeders to establish herds of grey cattle In 1962 Murray Grey Cattle were given breed status and the Murray Grey Beef Society was formed. The first Murray Grey Cattle were imported to Ontario in 1972. Murray Grey Cattle are easy care cattle - they calve easily, the females milk well, they grow quick- ly, they are quite docile, they readi- ly convert grass to beef, they fatten on grass, they fatten economically in feed lots, they have a high yield of saleable beef, they are naturally polled, they have dark skin pigmen- tation so no skin and/or eye pro- blems, and they are very adaptable to most conditions. The Field Day activities start at 2:00 p.m. and include a display of Murray Grey Cattle and some Mur- ray Grey crossbreeding. There will be some judging exercises for those interested along with weight guess- ing. Also there will be a showing of a video of Murray Grey Cattle in DRAPES -- SHEERS AV Balloon Curtains Valances CUSTOM MADE ~ HOW oo ~ osHAWA draperies VENETIAN BLINDS VERTICAL DRAPES 725-3144 annual field day and barbecue Australia.
