PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 29, 1986 -- 23 Along with court etiquette and rules of the game Fundamentals stressed at tennis clinic Tennis is described as the game that lasts a lifetime. If that is so, then about 50 Scugog youngsters are going to enjoy a long, long involvement with this popular sport. The kids (ages eight to 16) have been taking part in the Junior Ten- nis Summer Program (this is the 5th year for it) and organizer Diane Burt says the emphasis of the pro- gram is on fundamentals, rules and court etiquette. The program is held at the Port Perry Tennis courts five mornings a week for three straight weeks. Under the watchful eye of Mrs. Burt, Alex Pilepic of Whitby, a cer- tified instructor and Heather Muir, who helps out, the kids receive in- struction in all aspects of the game: service, lobs, fore-hand, back-hand, volleys and the over-head smash. They are divided into groups ac- cording to ability and skill, and they spend the morning having a lot of fun learning about this game of tennis. oo The program will wrap up at the end of this week with Performance Award Scheme Testing, which has several levels starting at beginner and working up to novice, in- termediate and tournament. And the highlight later this week will be a doubles tournament, when the kids get to put their newly learn- ed skills in action.
