Two of the best Tournament fans got a look at two of the best fastball pitchers when Russ Korbak (right) of the Greenbank Gamblers went up against the near legend Pete Landers for Oshawa Mothers. They were once team-mates in Oshawa years ago. Landers threw three innings for Oshawa. Korbak was very sharp in going the distance for a 4-0 win. Fastball tournament (From page 22) later 'it was just one of those games," but he and the players were very disappointed it had to happen in this tournament. Before the loss to Ajax, Legion tripped Sunderland 4-1 with Rob Evans tagging a two run homer and Lawrie Williams taking the win on the mound. Paul Graham took the win 5-1 over Udora with Larry Pilkey sending a two run shot over the left field fence. And in the mid-night game Satur- day against Gamblers, Lawrie Williams got the win in relief of starter Ken Irvine. Despite the late hour, the stands were filled with po couple of Greenbank errors allow- ed Legion to come away with a 4-3 win. The Port Perry Midgets played some pretty good fastball in this tournament. They lost a tough one 6-5 to Oshawa Mothers and also lost to Udora by the same score. They managed to defeat Port Perry Non- quon 12-9 in a wide open game and took an 8-3 defeat at the hands of Robinson Haulage. There were good crowds on hand during most of the tournament, despite the fact organizers had to contend with several rain delays and numerous games that went in- to extra innings, including one that loyal Legion and Gambler sup- went 14 innings between Whitby and porters and they watched the lead Richmond Hill. Yours in sport, DOUG SCOTT In the first round 0.A.S.A. In- termediate "C" action last week the Greenbank Gamblers dropped Ux- bridge out of the Provincial Playoffs by sweeping two games. However, the Uxbridge team put up a tremendous struggle before they bowed out of the playoff picture and the first game of the series in Greenbank proved to be a classic match up in a game that went for: eighteen innings. In this game the Gamblers craf- ty veteran Russ Korbak opposed Randy Underwood on the Uxbridge rubber and these two put on a pit- ching performance that will be long remembered by fastball fans in this area. During the eighteen inning contest Underwood sent twenty-two Green- bank batters back to the bench via the strikeout route but Korbak also fanned twenty Uxbridge batters during the game. Not only was the pitching superb but also both teams came up with outstanding defensive plays as the scoreless battle waged on inning after inning. . The longest game ever played in Greenbank Park finally came to an end in the bottom of the eighteenth inning when Hugh Johnston led off with a base on balls and was sacrificed to second base by Trevor Till. This brought Don Beaton to the plate and he brought the game to a sudden conclusion when he drilled Underwoods first pitch out of the park and the Gamblers had a 290 victory. The hit was Beatons third hit of the game as he contributed a dou- ble and single earlier. Short-stop Rodd Real also had three Gambler hits and played an excellent defen- sive game at short-stop. John Foster had the seventh hit off Underwood to complete the Greenbank attack. Darryl Norton, Barry Ferguson, Dave Jackson and Steve Yake had the four hits that Uxbridge mustered off the offerings of Russ Korbak and two of the hits came in the first inning. The series resumed in Uxbridge on Wednesday night but in this game the Greenbank bats came to life and the Uxbridge defense did not match their performance in the eighteen inning affair. Once again Korbak and Under- wood squared off as pitching op- ponents but Trevor Till smacked a long home run in the first inning to give Greenbank an early lead. But Mike Carnavale poled a long home run for Uxbridge in the bottom of the inning and the game was tied at 1-1. ¥ TROPHIES TROPHIES & ENGRAVING Team Jackets & Uniforms Bicycle Repairs PINERIDGE SPORTS SHOP Queen Street - Port Perry 2, PHONE 985-2839 mr -- Looking for A Place to Advertise Your Business?
