Resignations (From page 1) current first vice-president Doug Coates. As for the resignation of secretary-treasurer James Duncan, Mr. Jamieson said Bev Muir of Port Perry has been appointed to that position. Mr. Duncan has been the secretary-treasurer of the Fair Board for the past five years and he told the Star his reasons for stepp- ing are two-fold: his concerns over the liability insurance issue and the internal turmoil among Board members that began earlier this year over a proposed moving of the Fairgrounds to a new location . behind the Scugog Arena. receives an honorarium for his duties as secretary-treasurer, he has fears that he could be named personally in a liability suit, should a serious accident take place on Fair weekend. The directors and secretary- treasurer of the Richmond Fair near Ottawa have all been named in a $12 million suit that has yet to go before the courts. 'People (connected with rural fairs) all over Ontario are feeling very skittish about this liability i in- surance issue," he said. . While the insurance issue may be the reason cited by many of those who have resigned, most of them are also those who were in favour of a Fairground move next year to a new location on land behind the Scugog Arena. That issue blew up this spring, when Scugog Council, believing that the Fair Directors favoured such a plague the fair move, negotiated the sale of seven - acres at the present grounds to the Durham Board of Education for construction of a new public school. However, that deal fell apart in May after heated and bitter arguments on both sides led to a secret ballot vote that narrowly re- jected any move at this time. The bitter feelings continued at Fair Board meetings in recent weeks with accusations and in- fighting over several internal issues. Mr. Jamieson told the Star his position became almost untenable at the meeting last week when he was asked point-blank if he is work- ing. for the Fair or against it. Resignations from the following Ch *. persis werg received at the Board "Mr. Duncan said that since he of Directors meeting July 30. Stewart Diceman, immediate past president; Betty Cincurak, past president, homecraft division; Marilyn Smith, president, homecraft division; James Duncan, secretary-treasurer; Joe Baxter, director and chairman of the con- cessions and midway committee; Ron Deeth, director and chairman of the buildings and property com- mittee; Gerry Hunter, director; Janet Johnson, director and chairperson of the riding horses committee. Other assistant directors and committee chairpersons who tendered their resignations are Heather McCrae and Marguerite Mitchell who organized the popular Baby Show; and Ron Mitchell and Donna Donnelly. Frank Baxter who is responsible | for advertising and public relations for the Fair, resigned as a director two weeks ago. Rash of thefts (From page 1) Scugog Island home owner was away from home for half an hour in the late afternoon and returned to find a VCR and a chain saw missing. The front door had been left un- locked. And on July 30, a summer cottage near Caesarea was entered when the front door was kicked down. The owner told police that nothing was stolen. A mortar mixer was reported missing from a house under con- struction at Castle Harbour developments north of Port Perry. . And two empty cable reels belong- ing to Bell Canada were swiped from a vacant lot near Blackstock, value placed at $400. Despite the rash of break-ins inre- cent weeks, Police report one inci- dent of honesty. A local youngster found a quantity of money on the sidewalk in downtown Port Perry and turned it over to Police. The money has yet to be claimed.
