Johnny K-9 puts a head-lock around Troy Little Bear. Visitors take soccer tourney The Scugog Youth Soccer Club hosted their 7th Annual Invitational Soccer Tournament over the past weekend. The wind and rain of re- cent weeks were dispelled when a lucky horseshoe was found pro- truding from the mud on one of the fields. Teams from as far away as Coll- ingwood, Erin Mills, and Rexdall decended on Port Perry and scrambled their way through the ex- cavations on the road to the soccer fields. The standard of play was excep- tionally high right from the beginn- ing and both the Atom and the Mos- quito teams from Port Perry were knocked out in the first day along with teams from Pickering, Coll- ingwood, Markham and Whitby. In the Atom semi-finals, Markham beat Ajax 2-0 in a very ex- citing game and Rexdale triumph- ed over Bowmanville 4-0. Markham held out a superb team of little stars from Rexdale for almost three- quarters of the final game before letting up one goal. Rexdale squeez- ed in another with a few minutes to go finally downing an awfully plucky effort from Markham. The bigger boys in the Mosquito Division put on superb shows of soc- cer in the finals on Sunday. Bowmanville bounced Ajax 3-1 in one of the semis and Newmarket 'squeeked past a team of very young players from Erin Mills 3-2. This was the best game of the tourna- ment so far. Newmarket faced Bowmanville in the Mosquito final and both teams hammered away at one another for ages before Bowmanville conceded a goal. Newmarket edged in another goal before the end to make the score 2-0. All the kids were enthused about the trophies and medallions which were handed out by local businessman, Howard Hall, on behalf of the local club. The referees and helpers from the Scugog Youth Soccer Club were given a round of applause by the kids and their parents for hosting a very enjoyable tournament. The rain-killing power of our lucky horseshoe started wearing out an hour or so after the final game!
