12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 19, 1986 Country Store a Masterson family affair What started out as an Easter Weekend dream for Don and Ginny Masterson turned into reality last Wednesday morning when they opened the doors to customers at the Country Convenience Store in Blackstock. Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor and Durham East MPP Sam Cureatz were at the opening to help Ginny and Don cut a bright blue ribbon in front of the store which has been _ there for almost 100 years. But the store the early residents of Blackstock patronized at the turn of the century is a far cry from the one there now. While the Mastersons took great pains to maintain the old-fashioned "country flavour" of the place when they totally renovated in July, they also installed the modern equip- ment, coolers and display shelves necessary for a business that offers a full range of grocery items, hard- ware and household goods. The Mastersons took possession from the Thompsons on July 29, then immediately closed for two weeks and totally renovated the interior of "the 1400 square foot store. This in- cluded stripping the wooden floors down to the original finish. When they re-opened last Wednes- day morning, Ginny said the response from people in the com- munity was just fantastic, * Customers flocked through the doors to take advantage of opening day specials, get a look at the place and to wish the Mastersons good luck in their venture. 'It made us feel wonderful to think that she would take the time to bake this cake and bring it back to the store," said Ginny. Ginny and Don (an engineer with " GM) and their two children Sharri and Tim have made their-home in Blackstock for the past 13 years. When they heard the store was coming up for sale last spring, they talked about the idea of buying it and put in an offer. *'It was just one of those things that happened," ex- plained Ginny, who had worked the past seven years at Brutons Drug Store in Port Perry. The Convenience Store will be a family run business. The Master- sons have moved into the living area that's part of the building and this will allow them to keep the doors open seven days each week for long hours. In fact, Monday through Saturday the store will be open from 7:00a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Sundays. "A lot of our customers commute to work in Port Perry and elsewhere. Staying open in the even- ing will be for their convenience," said Ginny. The store is located right in the heart of Blackstock, just a stone's throw north of the four corners. Gin- ny is not sure just who started the business way back in 1890, but she and her family are determined to continue the tradition of friendly service and good country value. & 3 FRE Durham East MPP Sam Cureatz and Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor were present last Wednes- day morning to help the Masterson family official- ly open the newly renovated Country Store in PLAYGROUND NEWS GREENBANK by Tara, Michelle, & Michael Well, at the end of six weeks, we can honestly say that we've had a very successful summer.
