Against the Juniors, Port led 3-1 going into the sixth inning when the roof caved in allowing the Oshawa team to score 3 runs to take the vic- tory. Losing pitcher was Ken Irvine with relief help from Lawrie Williams. Port's attack was led by Bob Evans and Paul Graham with 2 hits while singles went to Dave Dickson and Ken Irvine. In Greenbank last Monday night a large crowd was treated to a well pitched game by Gambler lefty Ken Goreski as he tossed a tidy 5 hitter. Two long homeruns by Rodd Real and Trevor Till provided the margin Legion suffers three set-backs of victor . Ken Irvine again took the --dllowing 7 hits and 3 runs. Port's hitting was supplied by Bob Evans with two safeties with singles going to Rick Evans, Dave Dickson, Lawrie Williams and Todd Wilbur. At home Thursday night the Legion squad wasn't any match for the Merchants as they were blown away 9-0. Merchant ace Jim Chilvers scattered 7 hits while strik- ing out 18 batters. Losing pitcher was Lawrie Williams. Two hits by Paul Graham and Ken Irving with singles supplied by Rick Evans, Jay Williams and Jack Bright con- stituted the attack this night. With only rain out and re- scheduled games left to be played only 4 points separate 1st place from 5th place in league standings. In fact the league is so close this year that most of the teams still have a shot at first or se- cond place in the final standing. On Monday night in Greenbank Ball Park, the Gamblers faced the league leading Port Perry Legion and in an excellently played game the Gamblers finally won by a 3- 1 score. Ken Goreski, went the distance on the Greenbank mound with a sterl- ing 5 hit, 7 strikeout performance and deserved the win. The only run he gave up was unearned and he never allowed more than one hit in an inning. Ken Irvine started for the Legion and went 5 innings with Lawrie Williams coming on in relief in the sixth inning. The Greenbank runs came via the home run route as Rodd Real belted a four bagger to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning. Port Perry tied the game in the top of the fifth inn- ing but the Gamblers sewed up the game in the sixth when Rodd Real singled and Trevor Till delivered a mammoth 2 run homer to give Greenbank a 3-1 win. Rodd Real and Hugh Johnston each had two hits for the Gamblers with Trevor Till, Greg Rodd and John Foster picking up the other Greenbank hits. Lawrie Williams had a triple for Legion but was thrown out at the plate as he tried to stretch it to a home run. At Durham Fields on Thursday night Roland Osske turned in his top pitching performance of the season as he stopped Oshawa Juniors by a 5-2 score. Osske allowed seven scat- tered safeties and struck out seven. aLACK HILLS Pine Ridge Sports shop in Port Perry celebrated its first anniversary last Saturday, and Keith Acton of the Minnesota North Stars drop- Greenbank picked up 12 base hits during the game in support of Osske * who only issued three walks during The Gambler attack was led by Ray Meisner, George Redshaw, Greg Rodd and Terry Till who each collected a pair of safeties. Rodd Real, Don Phinney, Steve Foster and Brian Till completed the Green- bank attack. This Monday night (Aug. 18) had the Claremont Legion come to by Heather McCrae The Port Perry Tennis Club held . it's annual Ladies and Mens Doubles Tournament on the Satur- day and Sunday of the past weekend. The weather ar. 1 the ten- nis were both hot. Ten mens teams competed with Jay Neill and Joe . Vanderwyst winning the final cham- pionship match against Brad Big- glestone and Tony Tenwesteneind. On the consolation side John Scott and Ken Elliott defeated Bob Alex- ander and John McKelvey. There were 8 Ladies teams with the younger team of Sophia Brendon and Heather Muri defeating Leslie Allin and Sandra Adamcryck in the championship. In the consolation, II- se Stiller and Georgia Brock defeated Heather McDougall and Sally Martin. The M.V.P. for the ladies was Do Bigglestone and M.V.P. for the men was 'Brad Bigglestone, with Pine Ridge Sports donating an equipment bag for each winner. Tenwesteneind, Beth Charles and Laurie Cooper were responsible for running the tournament and they did an excellent job! Chris. Monday, August 25th should have the Oshawa Merchants in Green- bank to wind up the final league home game and the Gamblers are playing in the Fenelon Falls Two Day Tournament on the long weekend (Aug. 30-31.) Last Monday evening, August 11th, Anne Churchill-Smith of 'the O.T. A. instructed a Eh in the afternoon anu rons clinic clinics in the evening. A good atten- dance was had and everyone seem- ed to enjoy the drills Anne put us through. There certainly were a lot of funny poses as we stretched our bodies into shape before playing the game. The biggest tournament of the year is fast approaching -. the Singles Tournament on September 20, 1986. A sign-up sheet will be down at the courts soon, so get out and practice, practice and more prac- tice, then sign up. We're now into our fourth week of Monday night league tennis. No doubt, this will be continued next year because of the success of the draw this year.
