mn RR Se J TE ne Fastball tournament organizers concerned diamonds not ready With the eight top Intermediate C fastball teams in Ontario set to des- cend on Port Perry in mid- September to decide a champion, there are concerns that the out-field on the north ball diamond may not be ready for the tournament. A combination of the wet weather and equipment break-downs has slowed the work in recent weeks on the out-field extension. The area where the field is to be extended (to make it regulation size) now resembles a soggy black bog. A wide-track dozer that was to be us- ed to level the area has not been available because of a break-down. And pile-driving equipment that was to be used for work on extending an emergency sewer pipe in centre field has been held up on a project near Lake Simcoe. When the work on the out-field ex- tension started earlier this summer, the plan had been to get the area graded and level, then seed it with the hope the grass would grow in time for playin the 0.A.S.A. Cham- pionship Tournament, September 13 and 14. Doug Scott, manager of the Port - Perry Legion Fastball team, which is acting as host for the tournament, said over the weekend he is still hopeful the diamond "can be made adequate" for play in mid- September if work can be resumed immediately. However, seeding is too late now and sod will have to be Starting this Friday morning, about 200 residents of Scugog Township will get a phone call ask- ing questions about recreation in the municipality. The telephone survey is part of the Recreation Needs Study now being prepared by the Ottawa consulting firm Sesquaig, Inc. Jim Sevigny of Sesquaig told the Star his firm will take. 200 households at random from the tax rolls and calls will be made Friday through Monday from about 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. He said it will take less than five minutes to answer the questions which are divided into three parts: biographical information such as number of people in the household and how long they have lived in the placed if the area can be properly graded and levelled. Mr. Scott said that if the field is not ready by mid-September, the tournament will go ahead as plann- ed but at least four of the initial games on Saturday will have tq be played at the Greenbank Park. Playing some of the games in Greenbank rather than on the 'back-to-back' diamonds at the Port Perry lakefront would frag- ment the tournament and create a certain amount of inconvenience for players, organizers and fans. 'Ideally, we want to play all the games on these two (lakefront) diamonds so that players and fans don't have to travel to Greenbank," he said. While disappointed that conditions have made it impossible for work to continue on getting the field ready, Mr. Scott stressed that with four weeks still left before the tourna- ment starts, there is time to get the field in shape for the games. The 0.A.S.A. tournament will decide the champion Intermediate C fastball team in Ontario. As host team, Port Perry Legion is automatically given a berth in the tournament. The Greenbank Gamblers are currently playing Claremont with the winner earning a spot in the tournament. If the Gamblers defeat Claremont, the rivalry between Greenbank and Port Legion will be a strong card for drawing fans to the tournament. Phone survey on recreation Township; what their current recreation activities are; and what type of recreation and facilities they might like to see here in the future. This random phone survey is part of an extensive study commission- ed this spring by Scugog Township Council. The final recommendations from Sesquaig are expected by the end of the year. Meanwhile, Mr. Sevigny told the Star his company has conducted half-hour interviews with more than 70 individuals representing various groups and organizations in the community to get their views on recreation. He added that anyone wishing to provide in-put to the study can request an interview by contacting the municipal office and leaving a name and phone number. The outfield extension at the north diamond in Port Perry looks more like a peat bog right now, and there are concerns the field will not be ready for tournament play in mid-September. The wet weather and equipment breakdowns have delayed the work over the past few weeks. If the field is not ready, some of the OASA tour- nament games will have to be played in Greenbank.
