Last week's play proved this point with Lakers taking a win at home on Wednesday, only to fall victim to Redmen at Luther Vipond Arena on Friday night. The boys from Brooklin were not in fine form, to put it nicely, for their trip to Peterborough, anc it - showed as they returned home on the bottom end of a 10-5 score. Redmen allowed Lakers to take con- trol from the opening whistle, giv- ing up the ball, losing faceoffs, and offering nothing in the way of a stiff check. Lakers sported a 3-1 lead after the first 20 minutes of play, building up to a 9-2 margin after 6 straight markers in the centre frame. Redmen managed to outscore their opposition 3-1 in the final stanza, but it just wasn't enough. Gil Nieuwendyk, Dale Kernohan, Tom Wreggitt, Derek Keenan and Ken Colley picked up the goals for Redmen with John Fusco getting three assists, Keenan a pair. Keenan turned in a fantastic per- formance back in Brooklin on Fri- day, tallying five goals to spur Redmen to an exciting 11-8 final score. After two straight Lakers' vic- tories, the packed house at Luther Redmen tie series after win & loss Vipond Arena witnessed their lads show the stuff that earned them the Mann Cup last year. It took Redmen only six seconds to make their point. Winning the opening faceoff, Nieuwendyk pop- ped the ball to Wreggitt who found no difficulty slamming it in the top corner past Lakers' goalie Ross Cowie, It was a lead Redmen would not relinquish as they ran the score to 3-0 before Peterborough managed to get on the board with a pair of their own. Redmen continued where they had left off in the centre frame courtesy of Andy Perroni with just 49 seconds elapsed and finished the period with a 9-7 advantage. The Brooklin players can offer a big thank you to Lakers coach Mark Vitarelli. Midway through the final stanza, with Redmen holding a slim 9-8 edge, Peterborough were mak- ing a strong bid for the equalizer when they got caught with too many men on the floor. Keenan took advantage of the power-play situation that resulted with a long bouncing shot, and when J.J. Johnson went off for slashing a short time later, Keenan was there again with his fifth of the night. Brooklin was not about to get pushed around like they did in Peterborough a few nights before and handed out a fair share of hard checks. But officials Harry Benham and Mike Cake were on top of things ed at the school. It has been badly defaced with spray paint, but not as badly as other areas of 'the school, located mainly to the east side. The graffiti here contained several rude comments which were not suitable for publication in this newspaper. Anyone with information concerning the vandalism is asked to call Durham Regional Police. Your call will be kept in confidence. $83 all the way...determined not to let the game get out of hand. They handed out 30 minutes in penalties to the two squads, most to Redmen. Joining Keenan in the scoring cir- cle were Colley, Wreggitt, Perroni, Fusco, Nieuwendyk and John Jordon. This tied up the series at two games each and although the two squads went at it again in Peter- borough on Sunday and back home in Brooklin on Monday. The results were not known at press time.
