22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 26, 1986 Sports 7-0 win gives Greenbank edge in OASA semi-final series Korbak fires no-hitter at Claremont Last Monday night in Greenbank Park, Russ Korbak walked the lead off batter for Claremont Legion on a three ball, two strike pitch but then to retire the next 21 batters in a row and led Greenbank Gamblers to a convincing 7-0 victory. After Buck Winters, (the Clare- mont catcher) received his base on balls, Korbak was in complete con- trol and registered thirteen strikeouts in this opening game of the O.A.S.A. second round playoff series. The Gamblers did all their scor- ing in the second and third innings. Hugh Johnston started things off in - The Blackstock Lions capped a perfect season Sunday afternoon as they defeated Greenbank 10-5 to win the championship in the Port Perry House League Pee Wee Division. The Lions won nine straight league games and three t. Against Greenbank on Sunday afternoon, game was close through four innings before the Lions pulled away, thanks in part to a grand slam by Jeff straight in the tou in the Mite B (6-8 years age group) the Rent and Save gang didn't let a little rain get in the way on Saturday as they won all three games for the championship. Dennis Romeril then drove in their second run with a line drive single to left centre. In the bottom of the third inning the Gamblers broke the game open as they scored 5 runs and took a commanding 7-0 lead. Terry Till started off the big inn- ing by pounding a triple off the cen- tre field fence and scored on Rodd Real's long homerun. Don Beaton and Greg Rodd each had a hit and 'Hugh Johnston drove in Don Beaton with the 5th Greenbank run. Korbak drove in Greg Rodd and Dennis Romeril plated his second run of the game with a hit up the middle to - Store Nei) Rocka who hod been Hit by a pitch. The second game of this series will be in Claremont, Tuesday night (Aug. 26th). If a third game is it would also be in Clare- a as they won the toss for the third game home field. One more Gambler win will put them in the Ontario 0.A.S.A. Cham- pionships which will be played in Port Perry on the Séptember 13th & 14th weekend. It should be very in- teresting to see how Greenbank and Port Perry Legion will fare against "the cream of the Ontario Inter. "C" teams across the province. 0.A.S.A. action has disrupted the 'Oshawa City and District League games and the Gamblers still have to make up four games to complete their league schedule. Since the race in the league is very close it is pro- bable that these four games will have to be played. (Possibly a dou- ble header or two at Durham Fields)? Then the players with the first place finisher meeting the sixth place team, second meeting fifth and third versus fourth. The long weekend will see the Gamblers at the Tournament 'in Fenelon Falls on Saturday and Sunday. Legion nips ACL in final game Port Perry Legion ended their regular schedule on a winning note defeating Oshawa A.C.L. 4-3. Earlier in the week Port had been defeated by Oshawa Merchants by the same score of 4-3. In the 4-3 loss to the Merchants, Port Perry had numerous chances to pull out the win, but couldn't get . the key hit when it counted. Ken Ir- vine pitched the complete game and was victimized by a couple of errors while taking the loss. Supplying the attack for Port were Bob Evans with two hits including a homerun, Jay and Lawrie Williams with two hits, with /singles going to Grant Jackson and Ken Irvine. Against A.C.L., Port jumped to a quick 3-0 lead in the 3rd inning but let A.C.L. tie it with single runs in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings. Starting pitcher Lawrie Williams started and was relieved by Ken Irvine in the 6th inning. In the bottom of the 7th and last inning Ken Bryant, Ken Irvine and Bob Evans hit safely giving the Legion Squad the win. Port Legion now waits for the rest of the league teams to finish their * schedules. On the Labour Day Weekend the team will be playing at Caledonia in an intermediate open tournament. To date Port Legion and Garden River, featuring pitcher Darren Zack have qualified for the 0.A.S.A. Imtermediate '"'C" Championship being held in Port Perry on the weekend of September 13 and 14.
