PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 26, 1986 -- 23 Port Midgets reach the semis in OASA finals Port Perry Canadian Tire Midget Softball Team reached the semi- finals in the All-Ontario Midget "C" Softball Tournament held in Meaford on the weekend. Port Perry opened the tourna- ment on Saturday morning in the rain, by playing the host team from Meaford, Dave Burnett had little trouble as he allowed only 2 hits as Port Perry easily won by a 9-0 score. Lee Wilbur gave the local team an early lead with a three-run home run in the final inning, Dave Burnett added a solo home run in the fifth. Chris Cookman had two doubles with Craig Menzies having two singles. In game twq, Port Perry dropped a close 4-2 game to Bluevale (near London) in an exciting game. The two teams were tied 1-1 until the fifth inning due to the strong pit- ching of Lee Wilbur and some fine plays at shortstop by Greg War- riner. In the fifth Bluevale scored 3 runs to lead 4-1 but Port Perry made it close in the bottom of the seventh as they scored one run and had the bases loaded when the last out was made. Paul Cooper, Chris Cookman and Dave Culbert each had 2 hits with Bob Orr, Greg Warriner and : - Craig Menzies each had singles with Craig Venning adding a triple. ~ This was the final loss for Port Perry in the double-knock out tour- nament, and put the boys up against St. Mary s in game *" ce, The Port Perry boys really had the hitting on SENET R--T-- track in this game as they collected a 13-2 win. Craig Venning pitched a strong game as he allowed 5 hits and struck out six. Karl Durham had 3 hits, with Dave Burnett and Steve Langille having two hits each. Chris Cookman, Steve Durham and Jeff Ireland had one hit each. At eight o'clock at night Port Perry played its fourth gare of the day with Milverton being the opposi- tion. This was the fourth year in a row that Port Perry had faced the pitching of Brad Honerick, one of - the best pitchers in the Province, and he proved it again as he defeated Port Perry 7-5 in an ex- citing, hard-fought game. Port Perry opened the scoring with 2 runs in the first inning but Milverton came back with five runs in the third inning and two more in the sixth for the win. Lee Wilbur put in a strong pitching effort and took the loss. Dave Burnett had two Hits, with Paul Cooper and Steve Durham having singles. Manager Ted Culbert and Coaches Wayne Venning and Garnett Warriner were very proud of the way the boys played throughout the tournament who showed they can play on a level with the best teams in the province. Squirts on the move Port Perry Legion Branch 419 Squirt Boys Softball Team will be competing in the Ontario Amateur Softball Association Squirt '"C" All- Ontario Championship Tournament in Bracebridge on Labour Day Weekend. The Port Perry Team earned the right to compete in this two day eight team tournament by winning the zone three play-off. The local team had defeated Unionville and Bradford to advance to the tournament. The Legion Team consists of Jeff Card and Steven Desautels doing the pitching with Greg Rankin and Scott MacLallan catching.
