It is the first time in the long history of the championship that Port Perry has hosted an In- termediate C tournament and fans from Scugog Township and area will have the chance to root for two clubs With summer over, a lot of kids are turning their thoughts to school and hockey and ringette. Registration for both were held over the weekend at the Scugog Arena. Ringette registrar Carol Traynor said more than 50 girls are sign- ed up with more expected. New Minor Hockey The 'A' Division of the Oshawa City and District League will be decided on Monday night in Green- bank as the Gamblers and the Oshawa Merchants go head to head with the winner locking up first " place in the league. With only one game left to play, the Port Pery Legion, Oshawa Mer- chants and the Gamblers are all even with 28 points each. However, president Doug Moore said hockey registrations likely will equal the more than 400 who played here last season. The kids in this photo are Shona Moase, 7, and Tommy Chambers, 8, both from Port Perry. For more information about ringette or minor hockey registration, contact any member of the executive. Gamblers could lock it up Port Perry have completed their schedule so the Greenbank-Oshawa winner will claim top spot and will probably win a bye right to the league finals. The schedule called for the top place finishers to meet the sixth place club which would have been Oshawa A.C.L. However the A.C.L. team defaulted their games this past week and are reported to be Pee Wees are hot The Kinsmen Pee Wee boys soc- cer team played their first divi- sional series on Saturday in Orono and came out in first place. The first game was against Orono and Port won easily 6-1. Drew Car- dinal scored the first goal within minutes of the opening kick. Jamie Towns scored Port's final goal with a shot off his knee with Dave Cosway assisting. Ian Cobham, Alec Cranmer and Jason Reetham Clayton all played very well throughout the game. Port went on to play a very even: ly matched fast game against Tyrone. The Kinsmen played hard and out shot Tyrone 18-7 but were only able to score twice. Port scored their first goal when Jamie Brown made a shot on net but after the goalie's deflection Drew Cardinal headed the ball into the net. Port ended the game at 2-0 when Jamie Brown made a hard shot Which quiexly sail over 2 goslies oot. Port now advances to the semi- finals with their next game on Fri- day night. finished for the season. If this proved to be true the top place club would get a bye to the league finals while the other four teams declared a winner. The semi- final series would be best 2 out of 3 and the final series would be a 3 out of 5 set. This Saturday and Sunday the 0.A.S.A. Inter '"C" Championships will be played in Port Perry and it should be the highlight of the local fastball season. The Greenbank Gamblers play St. Marys in Port Perry at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning with Port Perry Legion and Garden River playing right behind them at 11:00 a.m. After the first games the game times will be decided on who wins or loses and this information will be available at the ball park in Port Perry. The Greenbank Club have pur- chased some extra hats for the tour- nament and any Gambler fan who would like a hat for the champion- ship round can secure one at cost by calling 985-8298. The fastball season is rapidly drawing to a close so all fastball fans should take in the remaining games and support their favorite team. The Greenbank team has not been to an 0.A.S.A. Championship final since 1982 when they participated in Wingham, and they are looking for- wand to this weekends action in Port Perry. based in the Township. As host team, Port Perry Legion is granted an automatic berth in the tourney and Legion's arch-rival in league play, the Greenbank: Gamblers defeated teams from Ux- bridge and Claremont to earn a berth inthe championship. Local fastball fans would dearly love to see the Gamblers and Legion square off in the final game, but there are seven other teams who will have something to say about that. The favourite in the tournament is the squad from Garden River, led by Darren Zack who happens to be one of the best fastball pitchers in the province. This team has been in . the final seven times, has won it all, and last year was runner-up. And as the luck of the draw would have it, Port Perry Legion will meet Zack and Company in their first game Saturday morning. That one will get underway Satur- day, September 13 at 11:00 a.m. on the south diamond at the Port Perry waterfront. | The Gamblers, meanwhile will see action two hours earlier in the day with a 9:00 a.m. start against St. Mary's, a team that came from behind in the elimination series against Palmerston. The Gamblers will be relying on some heavy hit- ting and the strong pitching arms of Russ Korbak and Ken Goreski. Action will continue all day Satur- With one event left in the Players Challenge for Camaros and Trans 'Ams, Mike Rivet will be sticking to the game plan that has pushed him into second place in the overall point standings. Rivet, who drives the Dennis Anderson IROC Camaro in the Players Challenge, grabbed second place in the points standings last weekend in Sanair, Quebec, when he drove "cautiously" to a 5th place finish. Rivet now has 453 points, just 90 behind first place Richard Spen- nard. But he has plenty of drivers breathing heavily an his collar. In fact, there is a real log jam in the point standings for second to fifth place at this moment. Rivet has 453 points, followed by Scott Maxwell with 446, Ian Philips with 442 and Tom Jones Jr. with 441. Any of these drivers has an out- side chance of over-taking Spennard to finish first, but Spennard would have to run into disaster next weekend at Mosport for this to happen. While Rivet team manager Mike Rysiecki would like to believe in miracles and hope his driver can over-take Spennard, he said Rivet will mainly be trying to hold on to his second place spot next weekend day and five of the nine teams will be eliminated that day. On Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m., the four surviving teams will start action with the final game slated for 3:00 p.m. It could be 5:00 p.m. if an un-defeated team suffers a loss in the last game as this is a double knock-out competition. An official opening ceremony will be held at 1:00 p.m, Saturday after- noon with a ceremonial first pitch. Because of the importance of this tournament, extra bleachers will be added behind home plate and down the lines at the south diamond. The other teams in the tourna- ment are New Liskeard, Blyethswood, Tavistock, Picton and Meaford. The defending champion team from 1985, Caledonia, has moved up a notch to compete at the In- termediate A level this season. This year for the first time ever, there will be nine teams and that has created a bit of a controversy. - Meaford somehow missed taking part in the elimination tournament in its Zone, but was allowed to com- pete in the championship this weekend on a ruling by the OASA executive. Several teams are reported to be upset at this ruling. In any event, all the action gets underway this Saturday morning at 9:00 o'clock at the Joe Fowler Memorial Park on Water Street in Port Perry. Rivet in second at Mosport. "We would be very pleased to finish second overall,"" said Rysiecki, noting that right now the Anderson car is the top "dealer prepared' machine in the Players Challenge standings. Last weekend at Sanair, Rivet qualified in 7th position on the grid (it was his first experience with the short tri-oval Sanair track) and when point leaders Spennard and Robin Buck were knocked out of the race early, this gave him a fine op- portunity to move up in the standings. Because of this, Rivet drove a con- servative race, concentrating on seeing that his IROC reached the finish line. He actually finished 6th overall in the Sanair event, but was given fifth when the second place car was dis-qualified for a suspen- sion violation, The Players Challenge for IROCs and Trans Ams will get underway this weekend at Mosport with the final race slated for 5:00 PM Sunday afternoon as part of the Budweiser Can Am/Trans Am racing weekend. This will be the final chance this summer for racing fans in Port Perry and Scugog Township to see Mike Rivet driving the Dennis Anderson sponsored Camaro. Nestleton ladies win it all The Nestleton Ladies Lob Ball Team ended the season the best way they knew how, by winning. Last Thursday Nestleton played an ex- tremly good defensive game dum- ping DACO 11-6. Including tournaments the Nestleton Ladies finish with an 18-5 record. In league play they finished 13-3. Among their accomplishments are a tournament win at Oakwood and A finalists in the 16 team Lind- say Tournament.
