Fun is fun. But each year the Port Perry decibel level seems torise just a titch. I've survived a rebuilding of the highway at my door, a reconstruction of the sewer system at my door (twice), two schools a-building (com- plete with triplet portables --- rooms, buses, and inmates) at my door, as well as all the forementioned clangorous trivia (also at my door). So I will probably survive this convalescence at this deafening door. My last words on the subject are simply these; in lieu of a quiet little country town, give me the delicate purr of a 747 as it lifts off or sets down at Pearson International. There, at least, is a sound which does something for me. It inspires confidence. I know that I'm getting somewhere. Not for me the trucks which tense, nor the bells which jangle the nerves. Even Rice Krispies have lost their appeal. What's that? Did my ears just detect a lone leaf as it unlatched from the front yard maple? It's so peaceful in the country. Is anybody out there listening? LOB INO. The following article was prepared by the Big Brother-Big Sister Association and outlines the kind of thing this organization does in the community. LITTLE SISTER BIG SISTER 'A Big Sister is a friend - someone who cares, who listens and shares life with a child." LITTLE SISTERS... are girls, ag- ed 7 - 16 who may be experiencing difficulty in some area of their lives and who are in need of motivation, encouragement and personal warmth. She most often comes from a single parent mother-led family PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 9, 1986 -- 7 although many little sisters live in families where both parents, grand- parents or a single dad are pro- viding support. It is a pre-requisite that all little sisters and their families understand and desire to be a part of the Big Sister program. BIG SISTERS. ..are adults, aged 18 or over, married, single, from all walks of life, who sincerely like children and are willing to share their lives with a child in need. The most important qualification in becoming a Big Sister is the ability and desire to make a commitment. Big Sisters are asked to see their little sisters regularly for at least 18 months. The relationship will take that time to grow and may, of course, go on for several years. The idea behind the Big Sister pro- gram is beautifully simple - a warm reassuring relationship between a mature adult and a young girl in need. A relationship in which a young girl finds someone to talk with, to listen to her problems in growing up, to take her places she might otherwise not go and to pro- vide a model of behaviour which the little sister can absorb and reflect. LITTLE BROTHER BIG BROTHER "In perhaps no other single field - of endeavour can fraternalism play a greater role than in the lives of young people." THE LITTLE BROTHER...is a boy, usually between the ages of 6 and 16, who, because of death, divorce, desertion or separation lacks an adequate male figure in his life. Without the companionship and guidance of a mature male adult, he is often more vulnerable to social and emotional pressures. A boy needs a man to talk to. A man to walk beside. A man to take him to a ball game, on a picnic, play softball, go fishing, bicycling or to the beach. Help him with his studies or just talk. He needs a man's ap- proval and acceptance. And a man's steadying hand to help him over life's rough spots. THE BIG BROTHER...is a mature and concerned man of good character. He may be married or single, and may come from any walk of life. He is a volunteer, will- ing to invest a few hours a week in 'the future of a boy who needs a friend. Becoming a Big Brother means being that man for a boy without a dad. Helping a boy grow into a pro- ductive, well-adjusted adult is one of life's great experiences. Few things can make a man feel taller than walking beside a boy who respects and needs him. Big Brothers are well selected, but are not trained. Each applicant is interviewed and informed of the responsibilities and expectations of a Big Brother. To help a boy it is essential that a volunteer act naturally. His image and example are the basis of his help. It is what he does that counts.
